Greetings All,

This is my first post here and I am impressed by the helpful community you have here.

My question relates to the method of Scripture interpretation in the first century. Specifically, the 7 rules of Hillel and examples of how these rules were applied in Judaism. Additionally, I would like some good resources on how midrash was used at this time. My searches have not yielded much so far. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Welcome

If you scroll to the bottom of this set you can see a selection of resources that are included in the bundle. Click on each and you will get a flavour of what they are. I hope this may help you find what you are looking for but i think these may be a good starting place.

Thanks very much for that. I do have these resources, Mishna and Bavli, but what I am really looking for is something that connects the dots. Analysis that identifies the rules and links them to examples as used by the sages. Alas, this may not exist at this time. What is clear to me is that there are clear examples of the rules being used in the Gospels, by Jesus Himself as well as the apostles. I have been trained in western hermeneutics which seems to lack this important link to these first century methods to a large extent. Just hoping there has been some extensive work done on this somewhere.

Thanks again for your reply.

You might find this interesting. It's from a good friend of mine.

(Not sure how to post a PDF; let me know if this doesn't work for you)

Yes . . . that is exactly what I have been looking at recently, thanks. I only seem to be able to pickup snippets here and there and was hoping to find resources to go a bit further. The bibliography on that article may lead to something. Thanks again.

Michael probably has info on more resources. Let me know if you'd like me to connect you with him.
