Chronic Crashing

Harvey

Recommended Posts

Ever since installing 11.0 (for Windows), or perhaps one of the subsequent updates, I experience constant, seemingly random crashing---so much so that I don't think I am ever able to run Accordance for as long as 10 minutes without it crashing (and, unless I am lucky enough for the session to have been recently saved, losing my work). There's seems to be no consistent pattern---I believe it happens even when I am engaged in simple searches, although most of my searching involves Hebrew constructs. This has become extremely frustrating; I increasingly find myself avoiding using Accordance except when no other tool will do what I need.

Is this problem unique to me, or are others also experiencing it? If the former, do you have any suggestions? If the latter, what is being done about it?

Harvey,

The crashes you are experiencing seem to be unique to you.

When there is a crash in the program we create a log file to help us identify the problem.  Could you please check if you have any files in your c:\ProgramData\Accordance\Logs ?

If you do, please send them to me - email rather posting them here - will be safer.

Thank you.

Please be sure you are running the latest version of 11 (we'll have a new one out in a day or two), as the team are always fixing bugs.

Then please press Alt as you open Accordance to get the Safe Mode dialog and try temporarily disabling the Highlights and User Notes. If either of these is corrupt you may get a crash as you navigate to the relevant part of the text.

It's very hard to track down intermittent crashes, but I hope that one of these fixes will help.

Hi Harvey,

I experience the same random crashing whenever I use the Hebrew Construct search in Windows 8.1 and 10, more in W10. I've mentioned random and intermittent crashes in Windows in passing. I just didn't mention that most of them happened using the Hebrew Syntax Database. Also, Daniel posted “Crash doing Hebrew syntax queries [in Mac]” at http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/topic/16585-crash-doing-hebrew-syntax-queries/?hl=crash, verified by Susan. I find that the crashes in Windows occur exactly like Daniel describes “It usually takes a number of iterations over different constructions moving phrases around and so on, getting error dialogs in some cases and then finally I'll move something and it will crash.”

What have I done about it?

First, I've learned to live with crashes until things improve. I've decided that using the Database with all of its frustrations (and there have been many!) is better than not having it at all. I bought Acc for the Database, and Acc has made many improvements in response to posts like yours.

Second, I've waited patiently for another Windows user like you to post about crashes when using the Heb Syn DB. Mac Acc users outnumber Windows users, ltr language users outnumber rtl users, and Hebrew users outnumber the Hebrew Syntax users, so much so that I wonder if Windows Hebrew Syntax users number one out of a thousand or more Accordance users. I hope that Acc crunches the numbers and sees what percentage of Windows users of the Hebrew Syntax Database have problems with crashes. I wonder if that would be a significant percentage of us.

Third, I've tried the usual - clean installs of Windows, including formatting the hard drive, followed by clean installs of Accordance; didn't help. I've tried running Acc in Safe Mode, and tried other things mentioned on the Forums for crashes not related to the Hebrew Syntax Database. Nothing has worked. Helen mentioned disabling Highlights and User Notes. Since I don't have any of these, I don't think my crashes are related to them.

Fourth, whenever I use the Heb Cstr Search in Windows, I limit it to one search, close all windows, restart Acc, and start another search. This works unless I stay in one search too long changing the variables.

I think there are enough posts about crashes in the Windows and Mac versions of the Syntax Database for Acc to look into this. Again, Daniel’s description is perfect - the longer you stay in the Database, dragging different items into columns, changing lexical items, etc., the more prone it is to crash.

Regards,

Michel

Just as a heads up, 11.1.5 has many, many, many fixes for the syntax database and construct, and it is already in release candidate.  So be sure to see how it goes after release.

Orly,

Happy to send the error logs by email---but to what email address?

We prefer not to give email addresses in the text of the posts which are available to all and sundry including bots. If you are logged in I think you can see the other person's email if you click on their name or image in the sidebar. You can also send them a Personal Message and request an email address. If you write to our support department they can also forward it to the relevant developer.

BTW, please do not reply to a Personal Message notice in your email client. That reply comes back to the Forum admins and does not reach the original sender. This is not related to anything you did, Harvey, just a gentle reminder to all our users that I don't need to read their PMs.

The crashes are not unique to Harvey. Same thing happens to me (Windows 10) but I have not reported it here. For me, it is most likely to occur when customizing the display or navigating in preferences and is very frequent. I am attaching what I have in log files hoping they are of some use.

I'm always a bit wary when a developer states that have fixed umpteen gazillion bugs.

It give the impression that they knowingly shipped a faulty product, which I am confident is not the case here.

Choice of language. I would underplay the bug fixes and boast more about new features.

Transparency is a funny thing - when we don't have it we aren't satisfied - when we do we aren't sure we want to know :)

I would be more concerned if a developer claimed there were no bugs or ignored bug reports.

Thx

Agreed. There will always be bugs.

Helen's comments elsewhere about updating the codebase etc illuminate this situation.

Still, several people including myself have noted that version 11 of Accordance has been the buggiest of all.

And the more new features that are added, the bigger the codebase gets, and the more difficult it is to thoroughly test it.

Especially now that Accordance has adopted other platforms.
