Recommendation: Printed Hebrew Bible FOR READING

JohnABarnett

Recommended Posts

I am finally about to re-embark on my Hebrew studies after a hiatus of, let's see, about 35 years (!!).

I am taking the recommendations of some from my initial posts to spend daily time just reading the Hebrew Bible. Though I intend to use Accordance heavily, I'd like to invest in a printed Bible for reading, which raises the question, which one?

"A Reader's Hebrew and Greek Bible" by Zondervan looks like a winner but the numerous complaints about the binding leave me skeptical.

http://www.amazon.com/Readers-Hebrew-Greek-Bible/dp/0310325897/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1464980734&sr=1-1&keywords=hebrew+greek+bible

I used to own BHS in my student days, but it is bulky and heavy, and the critical apparatus seems unnecessary for just reading. I do note that there is a Reader's edition of BHS.

http://www.amazon.com/Biblia-Hebraica-Stuttgartensia-Readers-Hebrew/dp/1598563424/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1464981280&sr=1-3&keywords=biblia+hebraica+stuttgartensia

I need the print size and quality to be good enough for my poor, bespectacled, sixty-year-old eyes. It doesn't need to be huge, just not tiny.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Would someone move this post to the appropriate section? I reread the description of the Original Languages section and realized this is not appropriate here.

What's wrong with Accordance on your iPad? ;) Full control over size, layout, and instant details is not as tempting / easy to activate as on desktop.

Thanks, Rick. Two responses.

First, I don't have an iPad or any tablet, just a desktop computer and an iPhone, which is too small a screen for me to use for any length of time.

Second, for reading (as opposed to studying) I just want to sit down with a printed book. Old school, I know, but that's just me. My eyes get tired no matter which I do, but I already spend too much time all day looking at a screen. A book doesn't tire my eyes quite so much.

Ok, sounds good. Your 'platform' listed iOS so I assumed you had an iPad.

Yeah, after I responded to you I realized my forum info indicated iOS, so I edited my post to reflect that it was for an iPhone.

Wish I did have access to an iPad, but since getting one for my wife a couple of years ago she has turned into an iPad zombie. Never lets it go when she's home.

Yeah. I've seen several Hebrew-English options, but I'm disposed to avoid having too much in the way of crutches, either interlinear or side-by-side.

That said, if the "Reader's Hebrew and Greek Bible" didn't have binding issues, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. It's helps are located at the bottom and focus on words used less frequently. But I hate things that are poorly made, and this is clearly one.

Put a patch on your right eye!

I bought this before i got accordance and its well made.

Hebrew on one page and english on other so its more like a walking stick, but i hear what you say.

Just have to treat yourself to a trip to jerusalem to get one!

John,

One of my friends did a reader's Hebrew Bible, published by B& H I think.

Go to Amazon and look up George Athas.

Thanks Phil.

I think that's the BHS Reader's Edition I mentioned above.

Based on what I've seen so far, I think this is the direction I will go. It'll be hefty, and there are some criticisms of the code system it used for parsing aids, but at least the binding is up to par.

Put a patch on your right eye!

Arrgh! Pirate scholar here, at your service!

  • 3 weeks later...

John,

What I have been using is the Biblia Sacra Hebraica Stuttgartensia with Greek New Testament.

I had it rebound when new. If I don't do something stupid it should last my lifetime.

The hebrew text is plenty legible for me.

I'm old school. I like having it in my hand.

As for reading, on the MT side, I insert the lemma's that occur 50x or less, with either an english gloss or the LXX form.

I also note two things; how often the word occurs in the book I'm reading and how often in the MT.

It is a bit of a pain on the first pass through the book; but pays dividends after that.

Thanks, David. I have the Reader's Edition of BHS delivering today. That's actually a good idea to print out and insert your own custom word lists. Now if I just had a printer...ours bit the dust a few years back, and we just don't use one much any more, so we haven't replaced it.

Actually I just pencil the lemma in the margin .3mm pencil.

Good luck with your reading!!!

Thanks, David.

Writing in the margins is a good idea for many, but it's probably not good for me. My handwriting is so bad that, despite being a very good student, my math teacher got so fed up with what she called my "chicken scratch" that she made me stand in front of the class in the corner facing the corner for an entire period. Nothing like that ever happened to me before or since.

During lectures in college I used to write notes in the margins of textbooks and then, when reviewing them, not be able to decipher what I had written.

Thank God for computer keyboards.
