Superscript in Copy as Citation

I copied Genesis 9:6 from ESV using Copy as Citation. My preferences are set to not include superscripts. But when I pasted it, I noticed that the opening superscript was included, while the second was not.

by man shall his blood be shed,

for God made man in his own image.
