How to type Greek π (pi) in Research field

Info: Accordance 11.2.1, Mac OS Mavericks 10.10.5

I almost put this thread in the bugs forum, but I'm not sure it's a bug with Accordance – the problem may well be with me. If I'm the bug, Accordance is powerless to debug me!

Nonetheless, I think something changed with 11.2 (I'm using 11.2.1 now). I use the Tyndale House Unicode keyboard called "Greek-TH.keylayout", and have used it for years. I'm sure it always worked to type any Greek in Accordance in earlier versions, now when I type in a pi (π), I get a pilcrow (¶).

So, I guess if others aren't having this problem, it may be only a Greek-TH keyboard issue. What keyboards do others have installed that work with Accordance? I can just install one of them if it will work.

Or, maybe this is an Accordance issue that needs to be changed?

Thanks!

Eric

I just thought to check this on my Windows 10 installation of Accordance (still at Accordance 11.1.6), and it does the same thing – gives me a pilcrow when I want a pi. Hmmm. Well, seems there I also have the Tyndale House keyboards installed (see screenshot). Not sure what's going on here or when this started. I don't type much into the Research field in Greek, but usually copy and paste, so maybe this has been this way for a while, but I didn't notice it before.

Hey Eric, Not much help here but I cannot repro. this with either Greek keyboard I have and one of them is the Tyndale keyboard. I'm on El Cap. I recall seeing a pillcrow versus π issue in 11.2 beta but it was fixed. I tried setting the Research both Greek and Unicode and both are ok. Unicode uses a different character set to display what I type which is a little odd but it's not getting the wrong characters.

I assume you are still set up with Greek prefs to use polytonic greek keyboard ? Mind you I tried turning that off and it still worked for me.

Does it happen in other Greek entry fields ? The bug I filed was for a regular text search field.

Thx

D

Well, Daniel, seems what you said brought me to my senses. I did not have "Unicode" selected. When I do, all is well. That may be the entire problem.

To answer your question about other search fields, I can input there just fine (there is no option for Unicode or non-Unicode). I assume that eventually the Unicode option will become obsolete since everything will be Unicode both on the surface (for us users) and under the hood (for the developers), right?

Hmm. The Windows version of Accordance doesn't seem to have the Unicode option there in the dropdown box next to "Research." I just updated it to 11.2.1, and there is no option. When I type in that box with the Windows Tyndale House keyboard, I still get the pilcrow, not the pi. On the Accordance side, all is well – I only needed to put a checkmark next to the Unicode option.

Perhaps the Accordance folks can let me know if the Windows issue is with me (the keyboard layout I'm using) or with the actual Accordance app?

Thank you.

I do have the Unicode option, but maybe it requires you to have a Unicode Bible or a tool in Unicode (like the Notes of those Bibles). That's what it will search. It isn't for Unicode entry, which is automatic if you are using a Unicode keyboard.

For whatever reason, I cannot enter pi into the research field on the Windows machine (unless I paste it from something else).

I have several user Bibles on the Mac side that I've never put on the Windows side. They are Unicode. I just copied them over and clicked on one, then another of them. They have no suffixes. I select Accordance as the app to open them with and I get a message: "The file ____ appears to have an unsupported file type. Please choose a different file."

Do I need to append some sort of file name to these files for them to work on the Windows side? If I can get one of these Unicode Bibles into Accordance for Windows, maybe I can prove that their absence was the reason I do not have a Unicode option in the Research dropdown box.

Ok so on Win 10 with Acc 11.2.1 I definitely get  pillcrow in Research where Greek is the chosen input language. Without Unicode it's fine with a Greek keyboard. I cannot however get a pulldown menu that does not show Unicode. It is always there. I tried pulling up Wallace and selecting the same text you have selected and then pulling down the menu and Unicode is still present.

Now if I instead of using the toolbar Research box open a new tab then I get π in either case (Unicode or Greek) with the polytonic keyboard. So whatever it is it's in the toolbar research box on Windows, at least for me.

Thx
