JPS Notes on the Torah Translation

In 1969, JPS (The Jewish Publication Society) produced a volume entitled Notes on the New Translation of the Torah.  This volumes explains the major changes from the 1917 JPS translation.

Chapters such as: The four great ages of bible translation, the philosophy of bible translation, the making of the old (1917) and new (1962) JPS version are included.   These chapters enlighten the reader as to the many possibilities and nuances of the original Hebrew words in the Torah text.  They also explain why the JPS has abandoned the method of the old "AND BIBLES" where every "vav" is mechanically translated as "and".

The contents includes book by book, chapter and verse  concise explanations of the many changes in the new JPS translation and, most valuable, the reasoning behind the translation changes.

Such a volume would be a valuable contribution to the accordance JPS library.
