wagnern
Greetings! I regularly search my original language modules (MT, Göttingen-LXX, OT-Peshitta, Targums, Mishnah, Talmuds) for terms and phrases using the "* X *" search feature. The problem that i routinely run into is how do I search for a specific combination of, say, a preposition and an ending simply? For example, if I want to search for all occurrences of ֺעליו in my BHS module, I cannot simply type in "*ֺעליו*" -- this prompts a beep and an option to select inflected forms (yes I understand that searching for all instances of עליו could theoretically turn up cases where this is not the preposition + 3ms ending). I understand I can also search with a combination of search features: I could search first for the preposition and then add the suffix ending search. But is there a faster way to do this? Is there a way to just search for the string of consonants עליו? For Syriac, how can I search for all lone instances of, say, ܒܗܝ (prep. ב plus suffix ending)? thank you!!! Ken Simpson
If what you are doing is looking for the text string עליו then just type that in (make sure Acc is in Word Search mode) but don’t hit return. You may have to tap ESC to stop Accordance autofilling the first suggested word from quick entry. Select “Literal Search” from the dropdown menu when you click on the magnifying glass to the left of the search entry bar. Now hit return. This returns 435 hits (in BHS-W4) of words with the string עליו including some with inseparable prefix prepositions. If I have misunderstood what you are trying to do, please try again. I love these sorts of puzzles I am no Syriac expert, but I’ll give it some thought now Edited September 12, 2016 by Ken Simpson
Ken Simpson
On the Syriac, while my lack of understanding of Syriac impedes me here, how about this. I have Peshitta-OT tagged open enter ܒ and then from the menus “Search” => “Enter Tag” => “Suffix" then in the sheet that appears just press OK This then produces this search line [sUFFIX] ܒ Press return and you get all the occurrences of ܒ followed by any suffix. You can of course subselect the class of suffix you want to search for using the drop downs in the sheet that appeared a moment ago. If you wanted that exact form, then do this "ܒ "ܗܝ only 4 times in the Peshitta. Again, please come back to me if I have miscued. Helen Brown
You can simply enter your word with quotes around it, and place a space between any prefix or suffix and the main word. If you see the word you want, you can right-click and select Search for Inflected.
Ken Simpson
That’s a very elegant and simple way of doing it Helen (the first one). Interestingly in Lev 27:31 the hit includes the sof pasuq. Any idea why that may be the case? Edited September 13, 2016 by Ken Simpson

Could you just briefly explain the differences between using only quotations and using quotations + asterisks. thank you!

Also, when I search "על יו" (as per Helen) I don't get Lev 27.31 as an option.
