Brett K.
I don't know if this is normal, a bug, or a correction for tagged texts. On occasion I notice that a tagged text doesn't have a word tagged. When I look in another translation, the same word is tagged. Here's an example. In Ps 58.11 the NASB has the word "Surely" tagged as H0389. The ESV, NRSV, and KJV do not have the word tagged at all--like it doesn't exist in the original Hebrew. What is going on?Thanks
Rick Bennett
For whatever reason, the tagging that we based our ESV, NRSV, etc. on was not consistent in tagging this word. The NAS95 was not tagged by us, so there will be variations by nature. In either case you should not assume that because a word is or is not tagged that it is an exact representation of the underlying original text. This is especially the case for Strong's based texts since the Strong's system does not even encompass every word contained in the original text (which is especially the case in the Hebrew). The most accurately tagged English text we have (EDIT: that exists on any platform) is the NIV11-GKE where the creator sought to represent (as far as is possible) every word in the original text (even words that are not translated). The GK system also accounts for many more words than Strong's. In short, English tagged texts are intended to give you insight into the original text, but were not created by the translators of that text so will never be 100% precise (and that holds true for every platform that utilizes them). The NIV11 is the only possible exception because it is based on literally decades of work, and the creator also consulted with the translation committee as he was able. I hope this helps to explain things. Edited September 23, 2016 by Rick Bennett
Brett K.
Thanks for the info. I just didn't know if this was a correction I should report. Sounds like it's just the way it is so no correction is necessary. Thanks
Ιακοβ
I personally have not been in the habit of reporting tagging problems, and there are certainly some quite odd mistakes If tagging was updated based on user reports, I'd probably start reporting them. Although reporting tagging issues is somewhat more cumbersome. How would you describe the problem and how it should be fixed? Perhaps "word 5 in <verse> in <Resource1> maps to word 3 in <Resource2>, when word 5 should map to word 4 in <resource2>"? (You have to go by word number, not the word itself, as sometimes this is the cause of the problem, i.e. the word occurs twice and the wrong one is mapped). Helen Brown
You are talking about cross-highlighting that will be off sometimes when a word or key number is repeated within a verse. That's based on an algorithm, not the tagging, as you can check the tagging in Instant Details. There's not much we can do to improve the algorithm.
