EricC
Is there a way to search English tagged texts for the Greek article rendered as a possessive pronoun? I see that in II Cor. 6:3, the translations render the article ἡ either as "the" or as "our". "the" – KJV, HCSB, NASB "our" – NKJV, NIV84, ESV, NET 2Co 6:3 (TR-Scr) μηδεμίαν ἐν μηδενὶ διδόντες προσκοπήν, ἵνα μὴ μωμηθῇ ἡ διακονία· 2Co 6:3 (KJV) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: 2Co 6:3 (NIV84) We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. How can I find other instances in an English tagged text? (I intend to search the KJV tagged text, but I think it should be possible with any tagged text.) Thank you! Jordan S
Eric, It doesn't appear that any of the Strong's Bibles tag "our" as the Greek article. You could search for it like this: [KEY G3588]@"our". However, the NIV (84 & 11) does. You could search using the G/K number: [KEY G3836] @ "our". Obviously, you can substitute the word "our" for anything else you want, like "the." Finally, you could do a Key number search [KEY G3588] and use "Analysis" (in the analytics drop down menu) to see how the ESV (or any version) translates a specific word. Here are the results of the ESV for the Greek article: Total number of verses = 605 (total number of verses displayed = 605) [KEY G3588] [Flex] (735 total words) Number of different forms = 73: who = 236 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 236 the = 175 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 175 that = 61 G1519 eis εἰς = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 60 those = 46 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 46 The = 45 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 45 what = 28 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 28 which = 26 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 26 things = 19 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 19 He = 10 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 10 he = 7 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 7 one = 7 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 7 are = 6 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 6 forever = 6 G0165 aion αἰών = 2 G1519 eis εἰς = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 whom = 5 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 5 contrary = 3 G0235 alla ἀλλά = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 G5121 tounantion τοὐναντίον = 1 forevermore = 3 G0165 aion αἰών = 1 G1519 eis εἰς = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 is = 3 G1510 eimi εἰμί = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 of = 3 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 3 their = 3 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 3 They = 3 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 3 anyone = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 cases = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 G5108 toioutos τοιοῦτος = 1 do = 2 G2041 ergon ἔργον = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 gathered = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 it = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 present = 2 G3568 nun νῦν = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 son = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 spoken = 2 G1096 ginomai γίνομαι = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 Those = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 thoughts = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 Whoever = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 whose = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 wife = 2 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 2 And = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 belong = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 by = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 disciples = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 for = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 former = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 had = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 him = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 interests = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 Jesus = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 men = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 mother = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 my = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 One = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 ones = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 people = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 rested = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 she = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 sons = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 these = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 These = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 they = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 this = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 What = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 while = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 Who = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 whoever = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 with = 1 G3588 ho, he, to ὁ, ἡ, τό = 1 Edited October 7, 2016 by Jordan S
Jordan S
I take that back. The HCSBS does translate the Greek article as "our."
Rick Bennett
Assuming that places where the article ο is translated as "our" are the instances you are looking for, then you could run this search: our@ [KEY G3588] (Strong's), or our@ [KEY G3836] (GK). I ran this search in a text set of all Strong's texts, and it only returned hits in the HCSBS. I went through a couple of them, and generally speaking the article is not consistently tagged in the majority of our texts. As I've said elsewhere, the NIV11-GKE is the best English text we have in terms of tagging, but even then it is not intended to represent perfectly the relationship between the translation and its underlying text. I hope this helps…
EricC
Thank you very much, Jordan. Interesting. In the NIV2011 with G/K #s, the first hit is Matt 8:17. In that case the KJV has "our", but in italics. Therefore, I assume, it did not get tagged. This is precisely what I was looking for. Thank you also, Rick! Edit: I had "the", where I should have had "our". Edited October 7, 2016 by EricC
