Accordance 12 Collections - looking expensive

Hi

The new podcast from Dr. J is online. And it speaks of the new collections. See it here: (Edit: sorry link removed for now).

It looks to me that the resources and combos are getting more expensive.

What do other user think?

A friend of mine wants to buy accordance and I wonder if he should wait until version twelve is out, or if just should jump in right now.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Sacha

I am sorry, the video was not intended to be live just yet. We do have some higher end collections coming soon, but also some great value lower priced ones.

Shoot, now you've got us all curious. I suppose this thread (with no trace of the not-yet-ready video) offers some nice publicity!

So he can buy Accordance 11 now and get the 12 for free.

Helen has mentioned before by the last sales of the collections, that the new collection (12) would be more expensive than for 10 and 11.

To be clear, she never said they will be 'more expensive', but simply that the current set of collections are being discontinued for a wide variety of reasons.  In many ways, Accordance 12 will be easier to get into than Accordance 11 was, and our choice of packages are going to be able to be more tailored for our customer's specific needs.  We've always worked towards keeping our prices fair and competitive, and I fully believe these new collections maintain that.

Hi

I feel a bit censored, since the video was uploaded to a public website like vimeo. Good thing that I made a copy of it.

For what Joel is saying, I'm inclined to disagree. In Accordance 11 the ratio between price and print value for the collections are the following:

Bible Study:              $199 for a value of $4500  -> Ratio 1:22.5

Original Language:   $299 for a value of $2000  -> Ratio 1:6.66

Essential:                   $499 for a value of $6000 -> Ratio of 1:12

Advanced:                 $1000 for a value of $11000 -> Ratio of 1:11

Ultimate:                    $2000 for a value of 17000 -> Ratio of 1:17

When I check the new options the ratio varies between 1:1.6 and 1:5.5

Most of the ratios are between 1:2 and 1:4.9

So the new ratios are less than what the used to be, so my advice for new buyers is: Buy now.

Since with all probability the pricing for combos/bundles is going up with accordance 12 collection.

Sacha

No one likes price rises, but these types of comparisons are not really helpful. People need to look at the things they actually really need.

For example, when I purchased my Logos package a few years ago, there were about 10 resources I wanted, and about 200 I didn't want. Piles of obscure junk that would always pop up whenver I tried searching for something, obscuring what  I was searching for. (To make it worse, it seems there was no way to remove junk you didn't want). So really that price I paid was for 10 things—not for 200 things. They couild stuff even more things in there and say you are getting $300,000 worth of value at a ratio of 1:1000, but its not accurate, becuse I still would have only wanted those 10 things.  (Which incidentally, is why I am not upgrading Logos, they wanted to charge me $300AU for a basic upgrade of one of the base packages with no additional resources (except some "junk")—Now I know their website says they have a whole bunch of new features, but because I don't need/want these new features, they are asking me for $300AU for no value add!)

I agree with you that not everything that is included in a package is helpful. But the argument between price and print value is not mine, it is the one from accordance. The promote their bundles / tracks like this. They do so for accordance 11 and they do so even more with accordance 12

So I think it's ok to compare. For us users this is a special situation, since we know the new pricing, and can still compare it with the old pricing.

The video will be online in a few minutes on youtube. Check for yourself.

Maybe we should wait for officially announced products and bundles, and each of us could make up his or her own mind whether or not its worth it to upgrade.

I suspect that most Accordance users will upgrade for some new functionality in the Accordance program, not for some titbit included in the bundle.

I would suppose that the video is copyrighted so you are on shaky ground posting it. While I appreciate your concern to warn others of price increases I also respect Accordance right to release their information on their own timetable.

Yea, the paper/print value is not really a useful comparison, its not comparing the same thing. For the most part I buy paper when thats cheaper, and accordance version when thats cheaper. (Except in the case where accordance is more expensive, but I rely upon  the resource so frequently, having it in accordance is worth the extra expense).

Regarding the availability of the link, it appears the link is public on youtube, however it's certainly still marked as private at the time I post this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEXF0RbdpLk&list=PLthdidJ4Qs5JKcFPLEXbIV4rlHpgKSic8&index=1

Anyway, for me, there is one feature already announced, that alone, will make it worth the upgrade (assuming its not insanely expensive)

There will undoubtably  be upgrade pricing.... I mean if one owns everything in the Essential 12 bundle, I would bet the price for upgrading to it will be minimal.... Until we get official prices and lists of what is in each bundle we have no real way to compare and know if it is expensive.

Sacha:

You are a good customer, and I understand that you wanted to share your "scoop" with others on the forums. However, it really is not fair to us to publish and comment on information that we are not ready to release just yet. We hoped to have released the new Collections by now (which is why the podcast was uploaded) but there have been delays, and you all need to be patient for a few more days.

Over the summer we did encourage everyone to upgrade to the higher Collections as these would be going away. The same applies to anyone wanting to buy now, if you like a current Collection, get it now. We have reorganized to make it easier to upgrade along your favorite "track," and to offer higher value packages for those who want them.

As for the value comparisons, you are comparing apples with oranges, as they say. Our current collections do have a "print value" for comparison. This is very hard to calculate since out of print books may be sold for nearly nothing, or for many times their original price. And what price can you put on a fully tagged, completely searchable, and interactive database? The cost of the text alone in print, if there is one?

This time we have not attempted to put a print value on the Collections. The "value" is strictly the sum of the individual items if bought separately at our "regular" prices, not the list prices (which are often much more in the case of current commentaries). So you cannot compare the new values with the older "print values."

As before the upgrade of the program alone is with the Starter Collection $59.90, with reduced upgrade prices for current users and recent purchasers.

Please will everyone just wait until you can see exactly what we are talking about, before passing judgement. We don't want to censor, but we do want to protect our proprietary information until we are ready to release it. You will have plenty of opportunity to discuss later. If you appreciate Accordance, please help us to market it, and don't undermine our efforts.

Let me underscore Helen's point. When comparing price ratios, note that previously we compared our collections to PRINT prices. In Accordance 12, we compare them to the aggregate price of the individual resources purchased in Accordance. That's a BIG difference—and something I perhaps should have mentioned in the podcast.

I'm nervous about stretching this thread out by adding to it.  However, I would say that I find the price of Accordance to be outstanding value.  The sale prices we have on a weekly basis are unmatched. The customer service that we get is worth its weight in gold.  I'd pay for version 12 right now without even seeing it; such its my trust in them to deliver a quality upgrade.  Thank you to Helen and to all the staff who work so tirelessly to bring us one the finest bible study programmes on the market.

Paul.

This type of comparison is much more useful to me. The comparison to print (as Helen's post) is quite subjective. As described, this is "apples to apples" rather than "apples to bananas."

Hi helen,

Slightly off topic but from your comment:

The "value" is strictly the sum of the individual items if bought separately at our "regular" prices, not the list prices (which are often much more in the case of current commentaries).

Does this mean that you will start describing sales slightly differently as well, basing them on the normal module price? For example, from your current excellent sale, will it be described as save $889 or 61% off the normal price for the module. (This really is a brilliant deal continuing the brilliant deals we have been treated to in the last couple of years.)

A few tidbits I'll throw into this:

1. Accordance has always offered a way to upgrade to just the "engine only" without upgrading to a new "collection". I expect this will be the case in Accordance 12. Their upgrade cost to the "engine only" is usually very minimal and affordable which gives customers access to all the new features without the need to add new modules.

2. When I went from Accordance 10 to Accordance 11, there was also a "Custom Upgrade" option that allowed me to upgrade from my Essential 10 to Essential 11 (I could have gone higher if I wanted to, but Essential 11 was good enough for me). It was also extremely reasonable (about $20 more than the cost of getting the "engine only" upgrade). I expect there'll be some form of "Custom Upgrade" option to go from 11 to 12 collections, and while the pricing may not be "that" low again this time, it'll probably still be an excellent deal.

3. Anyway I look at it, it's way less than my upgrades have been with Logos. $90/year is the most cost-effective way to get access to all their new features, and my upgrade pricing on their latest collections was over $700. So anyone who thinks Accordance upgrades are "expensive" should definitely re-think it. :-)

Actually our newsletters and blogs do quote our regular prices, and only occasionally also throw in the list price. The website is currently programmed to compare the sale with the list price, not that we want to mislead, but until recently the temporary sale price in the database replaced the "regular" price so there was no other way to automate it. We will change that with version 12. We always quoted the regular price in the comments below.
