Pratico Van Pelt Hebrew

Gedalya

In his sneak preview #3, David Lang discussed at minute 11:16 an analysis of a text that appeared in Pratico Van Pelt Hebrew.   Are there more such discussions like that  in this volume or is it mostly a hebrew primer?

Yes, I found that to be exceptionally interesting and a very powerful demonstration of the versatility of using tagged digital texts.

Without knowing what passages are expounded further in such non-obvious (non-commenatry) texts makes the use of the info pane a more critical part of the Bible study workflow.

And what other non-commentary volumes offer similar insights?

Hi Gordon,

PvP follows a pattern used by Mounce in Basics of Biblical Greek, providing "exegetical insights" by contributors. These usually try to bring out grammatical aspect relevant to exegesis. I am not as familiar with PvP as BBG as I have yet to really begin work on it. Some are very short and others are more extensive. From their introduction though PvP say this :

4.    After the vocabulary section of each chapter, we have included a brief study that is intended to encourage students in their study of Hebrew. Many of these studies are “exegetical insights” or “biblical–theological reflections” with reference to specific Hebrew texts. A few are devoted to observations on Hebrew words or phraseology; others explore various aspects of Hebrew language that contribute to our understanding or interpretation of specific biblical passages. These studies will often emphasize a point of grammar or vocabulary that has been studied in a particular chapter. A few are readings that will highlight selected Hebrew verses of a biblical text with a view to grammatical, theological, and exegetical commentary. These studies have been written by pastors, youth leaders, graduate students, and professors; to them we express our gratitude for their contributions (see the following “Table of Insights”). This mix of contributors, with different levels of exposure to the language, should be an encouragement that any level of competence with the language can provide a better understanding of the Old Testament and enhance one’s effectiveness in the communication of biblical truth.

There is a list of such insights in the Table of Insights at the front of the book. I'll reproduce that here so you might get a flavour of the covered topics :
