How does the importance setting work in Research hits sorting?

The Research Tool is a favorite of mine, and I have been curious about the importance setting and how it works with sorting the hits of the Research Tool

 

From the Help File:

 

Options in the Reading and Research Settings Area of the Preferences Dialog Box

 

Research Area: Options in this area affect the Research options.

 

• Sort Order Pop-up Menu: Used to choose how the hits are sorted. Available options are:

• Importance: Hits are sorted first by the number of hits in the primary field, and then the other fields. The primary field varies depending on the tool. Hits are listed in the following order: texts, primary field, and other field, sorted by the number of hits.

 

I see that the number of hits in the primary field are a first consideration and then other fields come into play. Is that all? How this works has been somewhat of a mystery to me.  Any additional information about this feature is appreciated. Inquiring minds want to know!
