Linking Atlas to Photoguide 6

I just upgraded from Photoguide 3 to Photoguide 6.

How do I link Atlas to all six volumes of Photoguide 6, seeing that "Set Map Display" only allows for linking to one module at a time?

Thanks!

The best solution is to link it to the PhotoGuide Overview. Each article has links to the individual modules at the end of each entry.

Alright -- thanks!

That works -- it's a nice option to have the shorter article presented first in Overview, with the option to link to the fuller article in the individual modules, but there really should be the option to see the fuller articles in the individual Photoguides first.

The set of 6 includes the Overview. You should have it. It is a condensation of all the material. We had too many photos and content for one module, so we had to split it up!

  • 4 weeks later...

This sounds like something I might be interested in doing, but I'm new to Accordance and after considerable poking around, haven't figured out how to do this.  If it's not too involved, I'd very much appreciate a list of the steps needed for this, but if that would be too time-consuming, a pointer to another thread/topic or podcast that addresses linking would also be appreciated if anything is available.

Thanks!

PS:  I suppose I should add that I'm assuming what is meant by "Atlas" is the Accordance built-in Atlas tool, but for that Atlas I don't see anything related to either tab ties or linking.  I have looked at other Atlas tools as well (e.g. Carta Bible Atlas), and at least see options on those tools to tie them to other tabs, but even there I don't see anything regarding linking.  I also went into preferences and looked at the map tab display preference where I saw the PhotoGuide-Overview as a default option for Hypertext, but I seem to be putzing around in the wrong places.

EDIT:  I just found a podcast on linking which states that linking is an advanced feature that requires a thorough working knowledge of Accordance.  So... I imagine that means responding to my request for help with the steps needed to link the Atlas to the PhotoGuide-Overview is most likely far too much to ask for in this thread, so please disregard.  Sorry for troubling anyone with the post.

Rick, i wouldnt be put off by the warning. Dr j is very gentle.

Just make sure you concentrate on the podcast (have a cup of coffee ready and are sitting comfirtably). And be prepared to watch it more than once.

The pod casts are a brilliant way to get you up to speed and to show you things you didnt know you needed but then become essential once you have used it, not to mention shortcuts.

;o)

Not sure if you are a book person, if so, this may help you get up to speed. (See page 45.)

To link the PhotoGuide to the Atlas, right-click on the open Atlas and select "Set Map Display". Under "Default Tool", select "PhotoGuide Overview" and make sure you click the "Use as Default" button.

To open the Atlas from the PhotoGuide, simply select any location in the PhotoGuide and click the Atlas button on your toolbar (or in your Library).

Fraser and Mark,

Thank you both for the help!

Initially, I went ahead and viewed the podcast on linking that I mentioned, but found out it was dealing with something very different than what I was expecting and needed.  It dealt with linking multiple windows/zones for complex searches, and for the grand finale, Dr. J showed a workspace where he had set up several dictionaries he could search simultaneously when grading research papers.

After reading your posts, it seems to be working now, and (Surprise! Surprise!), I learned a few things along the way.

  • Selecting a location in a resource's Table Of Contents does not result in the Atlas opening to the appropriate location.  The selection has to be made in the content portion of the resource.
  • The Atlas can be opened to a specific location from either a text or a tool.  (Yup!  Sorry to say I didn't realize that.)
  • My initial impression was that "linking" is what was needed for me to open the Atlas to a selected location.  I'm now guessing that what was meant by "linking", is setting up the process by which double clicking a location on the Atlas allows for the opening of other tools (such as the photo guides) that provide additional information about the location.

When I made my initial post, all I wanted was a quick way to open a map to a location of interest when I was reading a text or tool resource.  Now with your help, I've not only learned how to do that, but that I can go from a location on a map to info about that location in another tool.

As an aside, I had actually poked around in Accordance after realizing the podcast on linking didn't really address my objective and had in fact set things up as Mark laid out in his post.  BUT, I was trying to open the Atlas by making selections in the resource's TOC, which simply wasn't working.  But after using the link for the manual Fraser provided and reading Mark's post, I had one of those "Duh!" moments and thought maybe the selection had to be made from the content area.  But each time I opened the Atlas after making my selection from the content area of the resource, Accordance would abruptly abend.  At that point I was nearing my wit's end, but in trying to evaluate what was causing the problem, I decided to close one of the two work-spaces I had open, and then all was fine.  I haven't gone back yet to play again with having two work-spaces open to see if it was just a glitch or if only one work-space can be open when using these Atlas features.

But thanks, again.  You've helped make Accordance much more useful to me.  :)
