Relative file links in User Tools

  It would be handy to be able to set up relative links such as file:///~/.... paths. Likewise and perhaps even more useful would be the ability to specify environment variables or something like it, for example file:///$HOME. Perhaps this could even be done through some sort of tool preference or tool display setting to configure such things thereby making them platform independent. Right now I can enter ~ or $HOME into the links and they are correctly retained in the link but they are taken as literals when the link is clicked leading to failure to the find the target file.

 

  Then reason this is useful is in sharing tools that link to files. If one packages up both the tool and the files referred to, it can then just be installed in a similar relative path setup but from a different root and it will all still work. Without this path editing is required for anyone installing the tool.
