Frequency Word list

Recommended Posts

I know this has been asked a hundred times. I've searched the forum but not getting what I'm seeking.

I'm making a Vocab list for James. Looking for words between 20-5 occurrences in the NT that occur in the book of James. So, frequency across the whole NT. But I only want those words that appear in James.

I searched via <COUNT 20-5> <AND> <RANGE James> But I'm getting words I know occur more than 20 times. Μεν, for e.g. I also tried COUNT on one tab and HITS on another. No luck there either.

So what did I do wrong? TIA

In the first tab you search for words found 5-20 times in the NT. In the second tab, you set your range to James and use the "Hits" command to search for the words found in the first pane.

Hey Anthony

This is the one case, which many hit, where the range set in the command and that set in the search range pulldown menu differ in effect. Setting the <RANGE ...> in the search string causes COUNT to report counts for the whole text, but the search then returns hits confined to the RANGE. If however you set the pull down menu to a defined range such as James, then the COUNT is performed for that range only and then the search returns both hits and counts for the specified range.

The doc Biblical Research and Analyses > Search Criteria > Search Commands > [COUNT ?] explains this :

The COUNT command searches only for the words that occur the specified number of times in the search range, as specified in the Range pop-up menu.

thx

D

דָנִיאֶל is right.  I'm not sure what Mark is trying to accomplish.

דָנִיאֶל's instructions will only give you words found 5-20 times in the book of James. If I understand Anthony correctly, he is looking for words found 5-20 times in the entire NT, that are also found in James.

You never need the [HITS] command to accomplish COUNT searches.  To find words found 5-20 times in James, it is [COUNT] with the James search range.  To find words found 5-20 times in the NT, listed in James, use [COUNT] [RANGE James].

Thanks Joel and דָנִיאֶל! Trust me to come up with the most complex way to perform a search :-)

I'm sorry - I read it backwards. While what I said is basically accurate, it's not what you appear to want.

If you really want counts over the whole NT your original query should have been fine. If it is giving incorrect counts that's a different issue.

What you really wnat is :  [count 20-25] <AND> [RANGE james]

And in this search I do not get μεν

I don't know about the < > brackets in your quoted query but they should be square. Also 20-5 must just be a typo I assume.

Oh ok 20-5 could be 5-20 also, in which case as Joel says.

Sorry.

To get back to the original question then, it looks like your search is correctly constructed, and I'm not sure why you're getting words like Μεν. Perhaps your "James" range is wrong? I've seen this before, when I'd named a range, but accidentally given it a wrong range definition.

I did the search a couple of days ago and was typing from memory this morning. I'll search again when I'm back at my MacBook and get back to you all. It appears that the search was correct. But something is obviously off. I'll get back when I can.

Did it on my phone while I've got a moment. I think

The search is correct, but as you can see from the hits, the words are not. Μη is definitely used more than 20 times in the NT

Edit: actually, it turns up 24 times in the book of James. So I'm not sure why it shows up in this search at all.

It's because you searched for * [COUNT], which is saying 'find the word that occurs before a word that is 5-20 times'.

Just do a plain COUNT, no asterisk.

I could have done *@... right? I think that's what I was thinking of.

Yes you could have, but *@ is always redundant. *@- is sometimes useful, but not the positive case. I hope this helps!

Yes. Thanks. I'm trying to remember all the accordance lessons I've learned and forgotten. Thanks again.
