Emanuel Cardona
One of the next sections in my daily readings will be the book of Proverbs (a chapter a day). So, I am looking for a resource that comments on Proverbs that is devotional but serious that I can use to read alongside this book of the Bible. Any suggestions? ukfraser
It depends how you define 'devotional' but i always find something, even just a sentence, gets me thinking in a different and new direction in nivac. Not used the proverbs volume and they are very variable but for me they always have A good balance of enough background and something to get you thinking despite sometimes being a bit contrived to fit the three headings of bridging context or contemporary significance. Certainly wouldnt want it as my only commentary but having got it, wouldnt want to be without it. (Have nt in accordance and most prophets in kindle when $5 a volume and some hard copies.) if you are not sure, get proverbs in kindle as a sample or possibly the whole volume as a sampler. I certainly wouldnt recommend getting a lot in kindle as an alternative to accordance with all the full blooded integration and links, but more like dipping your toe in the water and just getting a single volume until they are on offer again in accordance. https://www.accordancebible.com/store/details/?pid=NIVAC-OT https://www.amazon.co.uk/Proverbs-NIV-Application-Commentary-Zondervan-ebook/dp/B00OFMXWCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483379079&sr=8-1&keywords=Niv+proverbs Edited January 2, 2017 by ukfraser
EricC
A conservative commentary is the one by Peter A. Steveson, A Commentary on Proverbs (Greenville, SC: BJU Press, 2001). I find that his footnotes are useful (he interacts with many other commentators on Proverbs). The main text, I think, qualifies as a devotional, get-the-main-point-and-apply-it commentary. Unfortunately, it is not available in Accordance, but a competitor has it in electronic format. If paper will meet your needs, you can always do it that way, if you are interested. The competitor (L) has many books from BJU Press. I'd like to see more of them in Accordance. Of course, this is not an endorsement of everything in the Steveson commentary or in other books from that publisher.
