Hello,

I would like to know how to make the following search thru 'Hebrew Construct':

'any Verb + *any number of words in every verse or two verses + indefinite noun (without preposition and article) + any preposition + indefinite noun. I would like to get examples like these ones:

  הוֹצִיא לֶחֶם וָיָיִן וְהוּא כֹהֵן לְאֵל (Gen. 14:18 WTT)
   וְהָלַךְ מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה  (1 Sam. 7:16 WTT)

Thanks, M.

This is my first attempt, but it does not eleiminate the article before the first noun.

Thanks for the attempts. Please, let me know if you or someone else get(s) to eliminate the article before the first noun.

Is this it? I have looked at a few of the results and they seem to be correct if I understand it aright,

This search does not cross verse boundaries because I have left the search scope as “verse”. Change that to chapter if you want to cross the boundaries.

Here's my go at it:

This is refinement on Helen's original idea to use a NOT INTER as spanning the two words before the first Noun.  I believe the only edge case this would miss is if the verb is one or two words in front of the noun.  Those results can be found using this construct:

Combining the results, here is the saved workspace:

Hebrew Search.accord.zip

Two more notes:

1) The search will highlight the word present before the first NOUN, but this is an incidental highlight to help find the verses more accurately.

2) You requested "every verse or two verses".  Accordance does not support a two-verse scope, only per verse or per chapter.  You can try changing the scope to chapter, but then you may get some false hits.

Thanks for your help.

Joel, I have three questions:

1. What is the command in the 'construct' tab for verse and chapter search?

2. Your 'Hebrew Construct 2' does work in my platform (note I have Windows and Accordance 12). I get this message: "'Hebrew Construct 2' cannot be used with the selected Hebrew text in 'Hebrew Bible (Biblia Hebraica) Tagged'"

3. Under the WITHIN tag, you have set the limit for word proximity: '2-2 (to           ) words'.

- I assume this means 'within every two words alone'. Is my reading correct?

- Yours set limit works fine. But when I set the limit myself on the left tab '2-2', I cannot do it. I get this message: "the selected text must be entered as a number". How do I fix this?

Thanks, M.

Scope is found in the additional search criteria of the main search bar - see my small vid in my dropbox to show how to change it.

Try this version of Joel’s workspace.

The idea of the 2-2 is to specify exactly 2 words apart.  This may have a minor bug when changing platforms, Mac to Windows and backwards.  Regardless, the dialog should read "2 (to 2) words".

Joel, the workspace threw an error for me on mac as well, that was resolved when I changed the syntax from ETBC to Holmstedt.

Ah, yes.  The requirement of the syntax making sense should only apply if there are actually syntax items in the construct!  This was already fixed for 12.0.3, which *just* went live!

Guys, thank you so much for your help. Joel's last version worked well.

I have another question:

When I limited the 'scope' of the search to clause or sentence, I get the following message: ''There are no verses in the current range of the 'Hebrew Bible' ... which fit the current search entry." At least, I should get this example: וְהָלַךְ מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה  (1 Sam. 7:16)

So, why is it that I do not get any result?
