User files vanished in drop box sync

First, I sync with drop box. There was no current sync in progress so far as I can tell.

I was editing a user note for the past hour or so and when I went to save the note it would not save. So I closed the window and it asked to save the changes. I clicked yes. In the notes pane my recent edits were visible, but when I went to edit another note I got an error code. So I quit and relaunched accordance. I was then told that all of my user files are gone.

I've got absolutely no idea what happened.

I see some of those files in my drop box trash but I don't know what to do with them. I'm right in the middle of researching a sermon and this happened. I called accordance and got the answering machine. I've got no idea what to do. Please help.

When I try to restore from drop box I get 'there was a problem completing this request'. I'm afraid to do anything else.

I've got a back up from about an hour ago that will recover most of it but I'm afraid to put it back to have it vanish again.

Hi Anthony,

Sorry for your troubles with syncing. It is probably best to work with tech support to recover your User Note installation (vs multiple forum posts).

I will try to recreate this issue and have a couple of questions about what lead up to this:

  • Do you have automatic dropbox syncing turned on?
  • To be clear, you were editing a user note for about an hour and did not save until the end?
  • What do you mean it would not save? (Save was dimmed, error message, etc)
  • When you went to edit the other note you got an error, do you remember what the error message was?

Mike, Billy at tech support fixed me up but I'll go into detail to perhaps help isolate whatever the problem was.

  • Yes. I had automatic syncing turned on.
  • I was editing a series of notes in James chapter 1 for about an hour. Not all one note. I cmd-opt-dn to save and move on to the next note. So, thankfully, I only lost a small portion of what I was editing in the last note. The previous notes had saved fine.
  • When I say would not save, what I mean is that the app did not respond to my command to save when I keyed cmd-opt-dn as normal. Nothing happened whatsoever; no response. So, I thought to copy what I had written to my clip board and paste in another app for safe keeping (momma didn't raise no fool!) and clicked the red button on the open notes window. At that point I was prompted to save or delete and I chose to save. Good, I thought. Just temporary problem. But, as I said, when I went to edit another note I got the error.
  • I'm sorry, I do not remember the error code. I was in a bit of a panic at that point and wasn't thinking clearly, lol. It was something about file not found or some such. But it was a numeric code with a message; one I'd never seen before.

SCORE! I reproduced the error by deleting my notes file while simultaneously viewing the notes in accordance. I've attached a picture.

The fact that dropbox somehow totally deleted my user content is unsettling. This is the second problem I've had with DB syncing (the first was perhaps a year ago and corrupted my notes file so that my notes were all offset by a few verses and some were scrambled. Very strange. Anyway, I'm done with dropbox for the time being. If I resume, I'll find another way to backup my backup before syncing.

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the detailed information. I am trying to recreate this scenario and have more questions (sorry):

  • Are you an Aleph tester? Are there other desktops/devices that you are syncing to?
  • You said that all of your user files were removed - User Notes, Tools, and Highlights?
  • Were the actual files removed from the hard drive (user > Documents > Accordance Files) ?
  • Was Billy able to recover the files by restoring them on Dropbox.com and syncing in Accordance?

I'm not testing anything.

Not syncing with anything else on Dropbox. iCloud and other services. But only accordance w Dropbox.

Yes. All user files. Highlights, tools, notes.

Yes. They were gone from HD too.

Sort of. I recovered them first from time machine, made sure they were decent, then we looked at DB. We could then restore from DB and sync them, although I got the red error box when restoring files from the deleted DB folder. But everything seems to have restored ok. However, I've disconnected DB syncing.
