Need some help on switching from Logos to Accordance

This summer I am retrofitting a hermeneutics course that was built to use Logos Bible Software to Accordance. After many years in the Logos camp, my institution is switching to Accordance.

We have a unit that speaks about tense, voice, and mood. Originally, it was designed to use Logos Bible Software's Morphology Charts.

I am searching for the closest thing in Accordance. As an example, here is the Morphology Chart for the verb πιστεύω: (See attached file "Morphology Chart πιστεύω.jpg") post-34100-0-84484000-1495761608_thumb.jpg

To search on that word in Accordance, I opened up NA28 Greek NT to John 3:16, clicked on the inflected form πιστεύων, and then searched on Lexeme. In the Analytics, I created a pie chart filtered on Tense: (See attached file "Accordance πιστεύω on Tense.jpg) post-34100-0-18559500-1495764398_thumb.jpg

What I would like is a way to display ALL of the different inflected forms with parsing. To my way of thinking, I would like to click on the 111 Present Tense forms of the πιστεύω Pie Chart, and have it search and display ALL of the different present tense inflected forms of the verb.

I WAS able to display the 111 present tense form of πιστεύω by creating a [LINK Greek Construct], but the analysis was a bit disappointing. I'm also attaching a screen capture of that Greek Construct search. post-34100-0-79673100-1495764397_thumb.jpg

Can someone help me figure out an easier way to get to that?

Hi ya,

  A couple of suggestions.

You can get Acc to construct the search by holding the shift key and clicking on the Present slice of the pie. That will open a new text tab and search for πιστεύω@[ANY Present].

On the parsing it's a little more tricky. You can get the parsing by :

  1. do your search.

  2. Select a block of the text

  3. right click and select Look Up -> Parsing.

In the tab that opens you can customize the display (click on the gear icon and select Cusomize Display) to show you parsing for only the 'hit' words rather than for all the words in the selection.

You cannot do this for more than 200 verses at a stretch. So you cannot get all the parsing for πιστεύω in the GNT - it's just too widely used. But you can get it for parsing for all present forms of the word. It will also do it for all occurrences not just for the unique cases. I don't know what you need there so this may suit you or it might not.

You could also use the Analytics tab, which can be customized to show stats for all the distinct forms. Click on the View Analytics pull down in the middle of the text pane border and select Analysis from the Word Count Totals section of the menu.

Thx

D

I believe such a feature must be programmed first, because it gives you also visual sight of zero hits. I would definitely love it and I know in minimum 1 other person too.

+2 for such a feature.

Greetings

I'd like to offer a few suggestions, as well.

For the most information and control over your output, the Analysis tab (under that same Analytics menu you used) is fantastic.  It doesn't look like much at first, but type Command-T (or select Set Analysis Display from its gear menu).  Here you see a drag and drop interface where you can customize which grammatical elements you wish to sort and categorize by.  So, in your case, you likely want to drag Tense under the LEX, and then INFLECT under that Tense.  This way your chart will first show the Lexical form(s) you searched for, then break that down by Tense, then show the inflected forms used in each tense.  But, as you see, its extremely customizable.

Help page for customizing the analysis:

http://accordancefiles2.com/helpfiles/OSX12/Default.htm#topics/10_ref/db/set_analysis_display_tt.htm

By the way, this analysis data can easily be copied and pasted into a text document (e.g. Word) or spreadsheet.

If you wish to go more with the graphical approach, I would recommend the Bar Chart over the Pie Chart.  The Pie chart is great for viewing data as a percentage representation, for getting ideas over larger uses of it.  But, as you note, some of the information is temporarily hidden for space layout purposes.  The Bar chart more reliably shows all forms.  For your specific example, if you open the Bar chart for your search on πιστεύω, then switch the Bar chart to Tense to click on the 111 Present Tense forms, you can then switch to INFLECT to show those specific inflected forms.

The Pie and Bar charts are a great way to browse through your results and generate nice visuals of specific aspects of your results.  However, if you are looking for a more detailed, comprehensive view of the data, Analysis is more suited.

I would also recommend playing around with the Analysis graph - it can be very useful in seeing how the different grammatical elements' usage changes throughout the passages.

I'm trying to see how this works....

  • I'm searching in the NA28
  • I set my range to just Mark.
  • I searched for the lexeme πιστευω
  • I get 14 hits. All good so far.

Now, I went to see all the inflected forms used.

  • I use the dropdown and choose Analysis Graph
  • I then choose INFLECT (instead of LEX)
  • The chart displays the words w/ per 1000 frequency, and lists the words at the bottom of the chart, BUT...
  • It lists 7 inflected forms, but there are actually 11. It is missing:
    • πιστευω (9.24)
    • πιστευσωμεν (15.32)
    • πιστευσας (16.16)
    • πιστευσασιν (16.17)

Why aren't all the inflected forms showing up?

The Analysis Graph only shows up to 7 forms due to information overload on the graph. You can click on forms in the legend to remove them and display others, but if you want to see them all, use the Analysis tab, not Analysis Graph.

Thanks. It took me a bit to figure out to use Analysis in the dropdown, and then right click (or CTRL-T) to customize Analysis Display, and then choose INFLECT. That does it!

 its extremely customizable.

Yes I know, but the way it is possible to display in L would be handy.
