What do you think?

Are the improvements to the 15" MBPs significant enough to make 32G of RAM less essential?

Looks like the Mac Pro is a goner?

I think you wont be satisfied with anything less than the new iMac pro. You will always have that nagging doubt!!!!!!

128 gig of memory

;o)

What I found funny is apple.com would't display properly on current safari and I had to start up firefox to view the apple website....

32GB of RAM wasn't necessary before except for very specialized work. This MBP refresh doesn't change that.

If you need a MBP, now is the time to get one. As Scott says, very few need 32 GB of RAM.

As for the Mac Pro, Apple said a few weeks ago that it will be updated later this year.

Fraser – The new iMac Pros are impressive.  Not getting one.  A whole lot more computer than I need.

Dan – It took forever for the Apple site to come back up and work after WWDC was over.  I was finally able to go through a pretend purchase to experience sticker shock – always a fun experience.

Joe – We have a friend who has already ordered his new iMac, plus a new iPad Pro.  He uses his iPad for all his flight maps (small private airplane).

Scott – I certainly don't need 32G of RAM, but our son says he does (masters in computer science).

Rick – I think Steve needs to go ahead and get a new 13" MBP.  I missed the announcement about Apple updating the Mac Pro.  If you get one of those loaded, it costs more than a decent small car.

Joel – I really like my mini.  I bought it the end of 2012.  Got the fusion drive.  Very responsive little machine and relatively cheap.

I thought the new OSes looked good.  Those will keep a lot of software company programmers pretty busy between now and the fall.

I'll be replacing our mini which is our main family machine (central hub for all our media as well).

My new iMac is already in my apple.com cart... haven't purchased yet. But will probably click "do it" within a day or so.

Planning to replace my laptop with the new iPad pro, although I have some concern that Accordance is lacking some features on the iPad... I'll have to keep my laptop around for things like the module that shows greek diagrams, and also I am not sure if we can do "global" searches on iOS, i.e. search all journal articles for a verse.

My rants are on the ios thread but for a major frustration with accordance ios if you move to ipad pro is that if you open a text you can open a second window with a second text or reference tool, (original language, bible note, commentary or study bible).

For anything else, english tool, hebrew or greek tool, general tool or even if you open a reference tool on its own, you can only open it and dont have access to a second pane and can only search the tool that is open.

For ease and access and speed and readability and tactile experience, accordance on iOS is superb. If you use multiple texts and tools open at the same time, accordance ios has been unnecessarily limited.

I wouldnt want to be without accordance iOS and virtually use it all the time and my ipad is always within easy reach when im not actually using it.

My mbp is packed away and comes out about once a week, but be aware that depending on your way of studying (use of info pane, detailed analytics, research, stacks in addition to greek diagrams) will dictate how much you will need the full fat version on your laptop where they belong.

I use Accordance on laptop and iPad, but I use the two device and the two programs differently.  Searches beyond the simple on an iPad (other than added commands or tags) are awkward at best.  I don't think this is primarily because of the limitations of iAccord, but iOS.  I actually use the construct search.  I've even done MERGE searches (with coaching).  And use a normal workspace on the Mac to do very specific searches that would be either laborious or impossible on the iPad.  Not going to be giving up the Air anytime soon.

And, as Fraser says, the Info Pane (and other Mac features that may never be able to be duplicated in iOS as it now is), will mean that I will consistently spend more time on the Mac than the iPad.  It looks like the two OSes are gaining more and more overlap, but they may never merge.

However, I really like to simply read (and highlight) on my iPad.  I love the portability.  I use my iPad in church and try very hard not to chase any rabbits during the sermon.  (Since our pastor gets the sermons into Sermon Audio quickly, I always re-listen at least once during the week and pick up more of what he said even when I was focused – my hearing is still excellent; the ability of my brain to comprehend and retain is getting scary.)

If you click "do it" and are interested in selling that old mini, I am looking for one that will serve as my Plex server with the release of the new Live TV/DVR options (provided it has the right specs). Just saying...  ;)

(Ok, I probably just broke some sort of forum rule... sorry about that everyone!)

  • 4 weeks later...

I'll be getting an iMac Pro early next year. Likely also getting an iPad Pro soon since the battery in my iPad Air 2 is gone.

Yep, I'm switching back to a Mac (already moving files off of my Surface Book back onto my old iMac so I can get the feel of macOS again and get back up to speed), I'm keeping my iPhone (no plans to switch to Android), and going back to using an iPad regularly again.

Helen is the wisest lady I know. She knew that some time on Windows would make me appreciate my Mac more, and she was 100% correct. I am so looking forward to getting back to the Apple World, plus I should probably make an Accordance purchase as a thank you for her wisdom in knowing me better than I know myself.

Nathan, And dont forget you can run windows on your mac so every time you feel tempted in the future, you can boot it up...

The main thing i miss is explorer which i still think is better than finder. But the hardware (excluding batteries) is so much better, and the ipad pro is just game changing.

I just purchased the new 15" MacBook Pro. It's the best Mac I've ever owned. The keyboard is amazing—enough travel to give you the assurance that you've hit the key properly, and a firm, solid feel. It's crazy fast (especially after using a MacBook Air for years) and the screen could not possibly be more gorgeous.
