Tim Hall
So, here is a question. I recently purchased the Schocken Bible (love the translation & the notes) and am trying to figure out where to put it in with the Library. Would ya'll say it is more of a formal equivalent, mediating, or functional equivalent?
gbjohnston
To the extent that you find that a useful way to organize your translations, I'd say the Schocken Bible is among the most formal-equivalent translations possible from Hebrew into English. I regularly use it as a gloss when reading Hebrew, because it really makes an effort to confront you with the strangeness of the text. Hence it can be feel like quite alien English, but is generally quite close to the "feel" if the Hebrew. Hope that's helpful.
