Searching for דויד

When I search Biblical Hebraica for דויד, using the "Words" in the dropdown box, it says it can't find any results. But then it suggests search using "letters", and then after saying ok, it finds multiple instances of the word.

 

Is this a bug? Why would it find the word I am looking for when I switch to letters?  (Actually I do ultimately want to search for דויד and for דוד but I don't quite understand the differences here.)

Additionally, when I try a more complex search, i.e. 

 

 (בית (דוד , דויד

 

I get a popup box saying דויד doesn't exist, and therefore I cannot run this search, even though I know it does exist!  Perhaps the search "automagically handles the case where David is spelt with or without the yod, so then I try this:

 

  (בית,סכת) (דוד)

 

But then it fails to find Amos 9:11 where it says "Booth of David" (אֶת־סֻכַּ֥ת דָּוִ֖יד). How does one go about learning how to get the Hebrew search do what you want?

The help on Literal (Letters) Hebrew Searches explains this but the basic point is that the default Word search is expecting a lemma and then it finds all the words derived from that. דויד is not a lemma so it makes the suggests searching by letters. You can also enter the full vocalised form in quotes and search for that as a Word search. Interestingly the Literal search seems to be able to ignore vowels or at least in this case partial vowels, probably just ignores the vowel and uses the consonant from the hireq yod. I am not exactly clear why - but then I tried searching for דוֶיד and that quite happily found the Davids everywhere. So my guess is that it's basically a consonant search.

However, the big advantage of the lexical search is that it also finds the davids that don't have a yod. There are only 789 of those!

Helen, Gotta love Hebrew spelling. I haven't checked this, so you may already offer it, but does Accordance have the ability to search for both plene and defective spelling in the one search for the same word ? I mean of course, without just listing the alternatives ?

Of course, just use the lexical form, no quotes!

But that will also find other words related to that lexical form won't it ? It won't just find the one word and it's variant spellings or am I mistaken ?

If you want all related words use a + sign to find all word with that root.

 

If the lexical form has homographs indicated by a number, and you include the number, you will find only that homograph. If you don't include the number you will find all the homographs.

 

Vowel points are ignored unless you add a equal sign which also excludes homographs.

Thanx Helen, that all makes sense but I was really wondering if there was a way to do this search, and any like it, without permuting the plene/defective cases (this is run as a word search) :
