I suspect that the answer is going to be: "NO".

Here is what I want to accomplish -- which will help with my "memorization project of the Psalms": I want to display Psalm 14 and Psalm 53 side-by-side in the same pane - -which will help my aging eyes to discern differences, and investigate differences.

Can this be done?

Open a new tab and drag it to the side?

You cannot have them in the same pane. You can display 2 tabs side by side as Garrett showed. You can also add a parallel pane in which both display the same text (both psalms), and press the command (ctrl on Windows) to unlink the scrolling temporarily so that you can compare them side by side.
