One more activation?

Recommended Posts

I had to restore an old macos to a new computer (selling the old one) and am in the process of making sure everything works. When I got to Accordance I logged in and received a message that only one more activation is allowed and to contact orders@...  I sent them an email but am curios about this. Anyone know if there are limits to activating? I'm guessing it has something to do with the restored applications.

I think I should have only 2 mac and 2 windows, 1 ipad, 1 iphone.

You will get a personal reply tomorrow, but here, for the benefit of others, is our standard reply:

Accounts will automatically lock, when a point is reached where there have been excessive activations. This system was implemented in order to help protect the rights of the publishers and to prevent sharing and piracy. The allowance for activations is quite generous, but you have apparently exceeded this allowance. If you have to validate Accordance each time you run it, this is not normal and our tech support department can help with that.

Our license allows customers to install on 5 devices at a time for their own use. This would include Windows and Mac computers and any iOS (iPad/iPhone) or Android device(s) as well.

We can we reset your account, but first we need for you to clarify why there have been so many activations and confirm that you have not shared or allowed anyone other than yourself access to your account user name and password.

Thank you Helen.

The last couple times I've started Accordance on my Mac I have not received the message, nor when starting on Windows (never did have that message on Windows).

I assume it has to do with re-installs so I'll be glad to get it all cleaned up.

I'm about to upgrade the old hardware here, buying two computers soon and then a laptop (later this year). Additionally, I will install Accordance on an Amazon Kindle Fire device soon, while leaving it on my aging Apple Mini iPad. I tried installing the new Android version on my old Android Tablet but it didn't work well so uninstalled it. (My guess is when I signed in it counted as an install). Plus, I used to have it on a very old Apple iPad. It hasn't been used on this device in a long time. Sooooo it looks like I have about five/six installs now.

Thus, I anticipate "issues" when during the course of this year I upgrade the gear, trying to install Accordance on two new PC's, a new laptop, and an Amazon Kindle Fire. Should I call tech support before I try? How should I proceed? Thanks!

I just got done emailing with Ryan and my account has been re-set to the current devices.  I've never thought about limits although they make sense.  Accordance limits are very generous with 5 devices.  Because I'd gone over the 5 I uninstalled from every device except 2 Windows, 1 Mac, 1 iPhone, 1 iPad.  Guess I can't buy any more computers  <_< .  That'll make my wife happy.  Good thing Accordance doesn't run under Linux or Chromebooks although I wouldn't install on them as they are my play/interest computers.

sfarson: If you start to get a warning about activations you can simply email us and we can reset the count once we are satisfied that you are legit.

I plan to retire one device with Accordance iOS on it and I will delete all Accordance files and account information from that device. At that time should I contact tech support for further instructions?

Thanks,

Joseph

  • 11 months later...

Is there any way to see how many active licenses I have?

Yeah, I can count my devices :-)

The thing is that I upgraded my PC (new mobo, cpu and DRAM). I just migrated the previous install of Windows and with that Accordance.

I'm wondering if Accordance sees that as an extra install.

Perhaps an idea is a method like Evernote uses. Evernot can be legally installed on a number of devices. In the user account the user can see which devices and revoke the licence for that device.

I just want to avoid the trouble having to contact support.

Sorry, we have not implemented such a means of tracking installations. Support can tell you how many validations have been recorded.

Thank you Helen for the clarification.  I haven't as yet, received any warning.  But my latest MacBook Pro has had to be repaired twice with the hard drive failing within a few months.  Which effectively has meant three complete installs in as many months.  It's good to know I can come back to accounts if I exceed my quota.

With all due respect, the activation limit is a holdover from times past.

Each typical user in the first world have at least 3 devices concurrently that they change every 3 years or so. I have a iPad, an iPhone, a Mac, a Macbook and a windows 10 tablet. And is expecting to replace my iPhone and Macbook soon as they are around 5 year old.

The usage pattern of the time is far different from when we have only 1 PC where we work from.

Still I love Accordance and the staff. Just that this activation limit stands out so much and indicates that we're not understanding how some of us use our devices.

True enough I am the only one who ever uses my account (my husband isn’t into Biblical studies), I have my iPad iPhone and regular laptop and old laptop in my Library. Yet if I was sharing with my spouse as is deemed acceptable adding in his laptop phone tablet would bring me over the limit. Now I am not complaining since I have not run into the issue but I can understand how for many people this limitation is frustrating (not that I do not understand the need for protecting the rights of copyright holders). I know in the world of kindle most books can be installed on upto 99 devices (over kill since this is single user) but due to re installing it appeared i had more than 6 devices and i couldn’t redownload one book which only had license to be on 5 devices, which is how I learn the default install level was 99, we cleaned up my device listing and all was fine). Accordance’s limitations and its flexibility to help out genuine single users is slightly inconvenient but definitely not onerous.

The android app works well on Chromebook i.e. I get the full screen!

Got one dated and not kept current low-budget computer from seminary, AMD E450 APU, 8 GB RAM, hybrid drive.

One laptop, four thread i3 CPU was discarded this Autumn. I had used it for a long time, for the longest time on version 10 then finally had updated to version 11 last Summer.

I have a new laptop AMD A9 Dual Core, high performing, single-core rating one cpubenchmarks 1400. 12 GB DDR4 RAM. Still on HDD but will of course change that out as the old one wears in a bit.

I have two points to make:

1) Get ONLY AMD. It is a choice, particularly for Windows CPU:s.

2) Buy a phablet and replace with it both Your smartphone and Your tablet! Switch to cell phone and desk phone for regular phone calls and also for SMS if You can get one with memory for one or two thousand SMS.

I could not be more satisfied with the number of possible installations! It is perfection of generosity!

I have Accordance installed only in my desktop, Ivy Bridge gen. G2030, 12 GB RAM, HDD. The CPU was value for money. Windows 10. Q3 '13. Accordance version 12.3.1 haven't connected to the broadband for about two Months. I didn't download my previous purchase of old used Accordance modules second hand. Speaking of which I just signed and paid about half of my latest used modules agreement - it was a bit complex so any other buyer would have just backed off. I'll let it remain my last ever used digital products purchase!

Each user needs to integrate and sync their hardware side purchases with what their softwares are! So don't get fooled by what You are "supposed to" be equipped with. If You need to adjust something, adjust the monitor size!

Hi Lester,

If you want to compare times past with times present, you should be pushing for Oak Tree to rent Accordance to its users for a monthly or annual subscription/fee per device.

And I think you may be hard pressed to prove your assessment of typical "first world" users, not to mention the offence that statement may cause.

Also, if you can afford all those devices and expect to change them every three years, then I think you can afford another license for Accordance.

Please keep in mind that the license is for use on 5 devices at any one time. You can install on many more devices or many more times. The validation limit only alerts you and us that you reached a certain number, and we can easily reset it for you. We are trusting you to remove Accordance from devices that are passed on to other users, as you should wipe all the contents to protect your own privacy and security.

Renting, or a subscription model, would require us to renegotiate the contracts we have with all our publishers, a daunting task!

Praise God! There are some things I don't mind a subscription for but, I am glad with Accordance it is a once and done thing (of course I keep upgrading ...)

Good to point out. I really tend to be the last user of devices until they are obsolete. I've lent away one very old laptop that has no battery, I'm soon getting it back, it never had Accordance but has Logos Now 6.1 - the person who had it never started the software and has been living abroad in Asia for 1½ Years now, not having that computer there. Speaking of old computers I do have one 14" which I've kept myself, it needs to be quick-formatted as I've completely forgot the passwords, and it only had Logos 5 or Verbum 5. Good to be reminded of that, I'll charge the battery again (which I've done at some intervals).

For renting I thought a small subset would be meant that would take lighter efforts to compile. It need not exactly be just to get users started, but to rather be something niché, not lexicons either but perhaps resources that most users don't have so that it would appeal as an addition also to established users. Like a library of references for citations and select resources for more obscure languages functioning as introductory material resources, and for references outside the usual canon of the Bible. There should be some weight in the amount of resources:
