Help/Insight requested for unusual permissions request

When I restarted my MacBook Pro this morning, I received a request to load “System software from developer ‘Oracle America, Inc.’” Going into System Preferences: Security and Privacy: General, there is a notice that it was blocked from loading, with a button to allow it. 

 

Although I am familiar with Oracle, I’m not certain why I would get the request suddenly; and, of course, I don’t want to risk allowing malware to load that is spoofing Oracle’s identity. I did not install any new software since I last restarted my MBP before this morning. 

 

A quick search of the internet found similar messages relating to VirtualBox and Safari. I do have VirtualBox, but have not loaded it in well over a year. And the message did not come from Safari. I have not updated Java.

 

I wish I could get more information regarding the actual origin of the request.

 

If anyone has any insights, I’d be glad to hear them.

VirtualBox and Java are both produced by Oracle, so it's possible that's why, but I agree that it would be good if it explained why.

I suggest you update both of these by downloading the latest full version from the proper sources.

Yep that's a good approach.

As a general rule, I try to do deliberate or manual updates rather than just let everything sort itself out in the background.

Same with backups, where it is just as critical.
