I'd like to request as a module the newest, and perhaps final, edition of the Byzantine Text edited by Maurice Robinson:

The New Testament in the Original Greek: Byzantine Textform 2018. Ed. Maurice Robinson & William Pierpont. Nürnberg, VTR, 2018.

I didn’t even realize this was out. I keep a shelf at home for different print copies of the Greek NT. I could only find a paperback on Amazon but went ahead and ordered it for myself; too bad there’s not a hardback as with the last edition. I’ll be interested to see the differences between the 2005 and 2018 editions.

Jonathan, have you looked at an actual copy yet? After your post, I ordered one from Amazon, which arrived today. Really, I can’t tell that there’s any difference from the 2005 edition as far as the text of the R-P Greek New Testament. As I mentioned earlier, I noticed when I ordered it that it was only available in paperback. In the Preface, it states, "The present edition fulfills a desired goal to provide an affordable Greek New Testament in flexible binding that will be useful for both students and scholars of the Greek New Testament.” That makes me wonder if there are any actual differences in the text itself. There may be a few changes in the apparatus since it accounts for differences in both the 27th & 28th editions of the Nestle-Aland text; and, of course, the 28th edition is more recent than the R-P 2005 edition.

Anyway, if you’ve seen one of these and know how it’s different from the 2005 edition, please let me know.

Hello Rick,

Here's a summary of the changes between the 2005 and 2018 Robinson-Pierpont Byzantine edition:

There are three wording changes:

John 18.11: the word "sou" is moved from the main text to the apparatus as a Byzantine variant. This also changes the accenting of the prior word.

John 18.32: the word "emellen" becomes the main text reading, moving "hmellen" to the apparatus as a Byzantine variant. This moves RP2018 away from NA27/28 at this point.

Rev 2.17: the word "fagein" is removed from the main text, so that the main text now reads "tou" with a Byzantine variant of "fagein apo tou".

Also, in 1Cor 7.5, 2Cor 1.17, 2Cor 12.18, and 2Cor 13.5, "mh ti" is changed to "mhti".

The bulk of the changes are accenting corrections, along with some capitalization and punctuation changes.

As you mentioned, the variants in RP2018 now cover the NA28 edition. Notably, you will also see that in the book of Acts, the variant apparatus covers the recent release of the ECM for Acts.

The layout of the footnotes is entirely different, with Byzantine variants occupying their own footnote apparatus instead of residing in the margins, and there are now English section headings throughout the text.

Hopefully, we will have the "Look Inside" feature activated soon on Amazon so that readers can see this for themselves before purchasing!

I hope this summary helps.

Jeff, thanks so much. That definitely helps. And you would be the one to know as I see your name inside the cover as being responsible for the layout (very nice work!).

I am going to email you directly with a couple of questions.

Pardon me for failing to update this post. After further correspondence with Jeff, we learned that Dr. Robinson’s agreement with the publisher includes only making physical/print copies available for the first year. So I believe that means that we would not be able to make an Accordance edition available until early 2019. However, we are eager to make the updated text available in Accordance as soon as we are allowed to do so.

I figured he would be fine with it. He sold hard copies at cost, making no profit for himself. I am glad to be at the same institution as him :)

I would recommend sending Dr Robinson an email. He keeps a box in his office if I am not mistaken. A copy of one of the other editions set me back $10.00 cash which was only to cover the publisher cost and print cost. Dr Robinson took no profit to himself. Not sure what he does with the newer editions but it is worth reaching out!

Cheers,

Matt C
