Hi ya,

 

  In the text of Josephus in the Greek you have * every now and then. In Life there are 6 and overall there are over 80. Here is an example or two :

 

Life 45 Ἰωάννης δὲ ἐπὶ τούτῳ παροξυνθεὶς ὁπλίζει πάντας τοὺς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ συμβαλὼν τοῖς προειρημένοις ἔθνεσιν * τά τε Γίσχαλα κρείττονα πάλιν ἀνακτίσας τείχεσιν ὑπὲρ ἀσφαλείας τῆς εἰς ὕστερον ὠχύρωσεν.
Life 47 διεκώλυσαν δὲ Βαβυλώνιοί τινες συγγενεῖς αὐτοῦ ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ὄντες πρᾶξαι τοὺς λῃστὰς τὸ ἔργον. ἐπιμείνας οὖν ἡμέρας τέσσαρας ὁ Φίλιππος ἐκεῖ τῇ πέμπτῃ φεύγει περιθετῇ χρησάμενος κόμῃ τοῦ μὴ κατάδηλος γενέσθαι, καὶ παραγενόμενος εἴς τινα τῶν ἑαυτοῦ κωμῶν κατὰ τοὺς ὅρους Γάμαλα τοῦ φρουρίου κειμένην πέμπει πρός τινας τῶν ὑπ᾿ αὐτὸν προστάσσων ὡς αὐτὸν ἀφικέσθαι * τὴν Φιλίππου.

 

  I'm guessing that these are basically a colon or semi-colon. Does anyone know for sure ? I see similar marks in the Greek Pseudepigrapha though in at least some cases there they don't look like they are just colons/semi-colons but perhaps indicate missing text, or are for some other purpose.

This is a really good question. There’s nothing in the Accordance Module Info/Read Me. In placing the Josephus cross references and and notes, there’s nothing that seems to indicate further information coming from the asterisk. 

 

I looked at the Niese text on Perseus, and I see the same asterisk in the same places, but I couldn’t find an explanation. Nevertheless, we know the asterisk is in the original (although comparison with a print copy might help). Hopefully someone who knows will comment.

Thanx for checking that Rick. I think I may need Niese's apparatus. And yes I'm prepping a module request or two, but in the meantime I'll see if I can hunt it down in a library.

Yes. This asterisk symbol really needs to be added to the info about the text. The * (or a gap) indicates defective Greek text in Josephus at this place. By checking the English translation, you can see that typically something is omitted (or added) in the English text to make sense of the Greek text as we have it. Note: Accordance licenses the Greek text from another source and this is how the * used in that source. The text is not the current "critical" text of Josephus (such as we find in the Loeb series), since such texts are copyrighted and otherwise unavailable.
