Screen clutter, hiding interface elements

How do people feel about the idea that the panel icons would disappear, unless your mouse is hovering over the panel itself.

 

So it would be a bit like how kindle works, you don't need all of the buttons and stuff while you are reading, only when you are moving your mouse in that panel. Each panel could then be plain white, (or black) like a real book page.

 

Consider the visual impact it would have on a screen like this:

Is there an option to hide the info in the red box in the picture below in order to use the desktop space more efficiently?
