For Hebrew Teachers

I just found I could do something in Accordance today that will save me hours of work!

For my beginning Hebrew students, I like to produce passages that have the cantillation marks removed, verse numbers removed, and all of the proper names in a different color. I just found out that I can create an export of any passage in Accordance with all of these features. Simple cut and paste!

Here is an example:

Hi, Mike!

I know we've already exchanged information on fb's Nerdy Language Majors, but I thought of another tip.

If you shift-click a word to highlight it, Accordance will highlight all the hit words in the text. That would mean you could highlight all the proper names in the text "permanently" (as long as you are using that highlight). You could then use the [COUNT ?] command I mentioned to search for low-frequency words (e.g. [COUNT 1-99]). They would then be marked as hits and you could use the same technique to highlight them permanently. Following that up with additional searches (e.g. [COUNT 100-199]) and you could have a highlighted Hebrew text for all your tests. See screenshot (where I chose to use a variety of black highlights, so the test could be printed in B&W). This same sort of technique could be used to indicate verbs with hollow roots, ones where the second and third radicals are identical, etc.

The advantage of using a custom highlight set this way is that we can switch to it anytime we want, so we don't have to repeat our actions every time we make up a new test. If we're using Accordance to teaching in the classroom (which I recommend), we can also turn the highlight style on anytime as a learning aid.
