Hi, quick question. I've noticed that I am able to see BHS either in separate verses or interleaved - it will cover the entire pane with the text and continue on with the next. However for poetic passages it does not make the line distinction the same way the printed version does, which is a big deal.

For example, attached is Malachi 1:1-3 in printed BHS. Accordance usually just fills the pane, but the lines in the printed version are way different as you can see.

Is there a way to do it? I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong or something...

Thank you in advance

We do not currently support the poetic layout. Sorry.

Can I suggest that Accordance never support this? The BHS layout is the modern editors' decision and has nothing to do with any medieval manuscript evidence. Moreover, folks who work in poetry a lot often disagree with the layout's implied poetic line divisions.

My 2¢.

Could not agree with you more there

Options are always nice. For Bibles that do have poetic formatting, it can be turned off in the preferences. I would like to see an option in our modules that are specifically based on the BHS to replicate the line breaks in the printed version. But those who do not want it could disable it.

I should've have clarified and not been quite so blunt -- the real question is an issue of time. That would take a lot of formatting and I'd rather see Accordance do other things instead.

I agree. Granted, the formatting in BHS is secondary. But that's no different from formatting in the Greek NT (Nestle-Aland in particular), and it gives the reader an idea of how those who worked on the edition took those passages, whether one agrees with it or not. I don't see why BHS should be different in this regard from any other printed book.

Of course, the other point—time invested in that kind of work which could be invested elsewhere—is a valid argument. But I for one would consider reproducing the format of the printed version a worthwhile addition. FWIW, I mentioned that over a year ago to an Accordance sales rep, who was surprised that this was not possible.

Like supporting RTL text in notes and DB imports?

I would support a BHS display option. I’m familiar with it, and I might read the HB on my iPad more with such a feature.

But if I had to choose only one new display option, it would be something different. I have my own 1574 page file of the HB with the BHS page numbers and line breaks. When I read from it I always find myself wanting to change its line breaks to reflect the syntax of clauses. On an 8 1/2 x 11 page of paper I can make it look more like a list of clauses. So, in Acc I would love to see one clause per line instead of separate verses or paragraphs. Many of us learned to read that way, and many of us are looking for the beginning and end of clauses as we peruse our search results.

Not just for Hebrew either, the clause-based display.

Thx

Yes, yes -- display by clause, not just verse!
