Problems with Infer

I'm trying to use INFER working from the GNT into the LXX. Any time I use the infer command, I get a dialogue bot saying "Now building work groups from LXX." I've also tried the combined GNT + LXX text with the same result. I've attached a screen shot if that is helpful at all.  Thanks.

It doesn't look like you've set your range in the left tab. Create a permanent range and then run it. It'll still take a few minutes to run it against the entire OT.

Actually, I tried this search and had a crash every time. Probably a memory error. I've reported it.

Clint, this isn't particularly abnormal. It is highly recommended that you set a range when searching with INFER. It is very resource intensive and quite a complex search.

 

If you can describe exactly what you're looking for we may be able to help.

 

Are you looking for all inferences to the LXX from Matthew 25:31-40?

Hey Clint,

 

  The way you've got the search configured Accordance will create a list of 6 word groups from the LXX and then search the GNT with them. Given the number of words in the LXX that's a lot of word groups. If you do it the other way around it create very few word groups and then search the LXX for them and the search is very quick.

 

  The question is where do you want the results - hits in the NT or the LXX. Looking at your query above it looks like you may want the Mt 25:31-40 word groups that can be found in the LXX, as Jeremy suggests. If so you can do this and it will find them very quickly.

 

  So I would do your search in the left hand tab for Mt 25:31-40

  And then in the right hand LXX tab do [iNFER 6 NA28 Greek NT]

 

If you really do need it the other way around it will take a long time to run. It takes quite a number of minutes just to produce the word groups. I ran it and it took an hour basically. And most of that time, over 55 minutes, was generating the word groups from the LXX. And the query on the GNT tab will need to be  [RANGE mt 25:31-40] <AND> [iNFER 6 LXX Rahlfs Tagged].

I agree. Although it shouldn't crash, I must say this is a massive search. It's much better to infer from the smaller passage to the larger. To ask to create and search for for every 6 word phrase in the LXX is to overload the memory for sure!

 

Once you have the quoted phrases in the LXX you can use Search back to find them in the GNT.

Actually you do seem to have uncovered some bugs in the Infer search which should be fixed in time for the release of 12.4.

Thanks everyone for the help. Yes, I was using INFER the wrong way; much better when I use the command from the LXX and point it to a narrow passage (Matt 25:31-40). The beta of 12.3 still crashes, but the stable version seems fine. Oh to do less administrative work and more exegesis! I don't use this command often enough so I "relearn" every time (or so it seems to me).
