JC Ryle Expository Thoughts - missing sections

Not sure if I'm missing something but I can't locate the technical notes in my JC Ryle Expository Thoughts.

 

I was reading my hardback copy of John 3 this afternoon and found it fascinating, first the overview of the passage and then the technical notes go into more details. So as I was finishing my studies this evening I turned to my Accordance copy but it appears only to be the overview of the passage, unless I'm missing something the bulk of the work in the technical notes is missing! The same appears to be for the other gospels, although the technical notes are less then compared with John. Any idea where they are? Is there a separate file?

It seems only to contain the overview not the notes. I too would like to see the notes added if it was at all possible.

This must be an oversight by Accordance since it’s public domain and all readily available.

 

While the notes were less in Matthew and Mark, for Luke and more so John the notes are very substantial and form the bulk of the work. There must be around 1/3 of JC Ryles Expository Thoughts missing in Accordance.

 

I’m surprised no one else has noticed this glaring omission, perhaps not many people are reading Ryle. Hope it can be quickly rectified since it’s not a cheap resource for a public domain work.

Disappointed that Accordance have not responded to this in nearly a week...

 

A disclaimer should be put on this module or it should be pulled from sale until the missing 30-40% is included. It can’t be right to sell this as Ryle’s Expository Thoughts when so much is missing.

A quick glance through a PDF of Ryle confirms what you say. Not only are the copious and substantial notes missing, so is Ryle's conclusion to his thoughts on John, found after the notes.

 

The way the thoughts on John in the Accordance module stands now, it ends abruptly, without Ryle's entreaty that serves as a fitting conclusion to the work.

 

I don't know about pulling it from sale but certainly a disclaimer might be considered. But bearing in mind this is a classic public domain work, I cannot see OakTree folk making this a priority.

 

Also, how would you suggest they add the notes?

As in the printed work?

Or in a second, linked, module that can scroll in parallel?

Or some other way?

 

 

Going by the webpage you linked to, the "Technical Notes" seem to be limited to the Gospel of John and there are 97 sections of them.

 

 

 

Also, on the web page for this module the following sentence needs correcting:

 

"The author did not prepare the work for scholars, but instead that the volumes were for family and private use."

It would be nice if the notes could scroll with the text where appropriate, this would be much more useful for John where the bulk of the work is in the notes, Luke is more 50/50, whereas there are less notes for Matt and Mark (they are all missing for each gospel - not just limited to John).

 

I hope this is not seen as a low priority by Accordance. To sell such a classic work with so much of the text missing, it needs to be made right as quickly as possible. Hopefully the text is there ready and it was just omitted from the module when released.

We'll definitely look into this. The lack of response probably has to do with everything that's going on as we prepare for ETS/SBL. If there is content missing (and it certainly looks like there is), we'll take care of it asap.

Thank you so much for this update, a very nice gift for Christmas!

 

I have quickly checked through and compared with my hardback copies - John's gospel, which has the most technical notes looks very good indeed and appears to match up with what was published:

However, Luke's gospel, which also has a lot of technical notes is completely different and very 'light' compared to the published version, I wonder if these are someone else's notes rather than Ryle's? Here is a link to a good source text for Luke's gospel with Ryle's notes:

Sorry, by update I meant acknowledgement rather than fix - that would have been unreasonable, I should have been clearer

This update looks to have corrected the technical notes in Luke's gospel, which look super good now!

Yes. Sorry for the delay. It won't take very long for Matthew and Mark. I wanted to release the Luke portion asap, since it was missing so much content in the highly-edited edition we had been using.
BTW, I also did a lot of formatting work in John for a more consistent appearance.
