strange symbol in Ralfs LXX

I see this strange symbol in LXX1 (Ralfs tagged): ※

 

For example: “Job 35:7 ἐπεὶ δὲ οὖν δίκαιος εἶ, τί δώσεις αὐτῷ; ※ ἢ τί ἐκ χειρός σου λήμψεται; Job 35:8 ※ ἀνδρὶ τῷ ὁμοίῳ σου ἡ ἀσέβειά σου, ※ καὶ υἱῷ ἀνθρώπου ἡ δικαιοσύνη σου.” (Job 35:7-8 LXX1)

What does it mean? I do not see it mentioned in the Read Me module. Thank you.

And I think it has to do with different recensions of a text... Job has some interesting textual issues. Someone who knows more than I can pick it up from here!

Sure! I just looked this up in the MT-LXX Parallel module, since I was curious, and the parts of the text marked in Rahlfs with this asterisk have this note from Tov/Polak:

 

17 ---% Element not represented in the Old Greek and supplied in Job by “Theodotion” with asterisk.

Abram I was working my way through Decker's text (at your instigation; I am reading through the 4 gospels and Decker using your tool), and an exercise took me to Job 35:3 in the LXX. My eye strayed to the following verses, and was struck by the funky asterisk. My knowledge of LXX textual criticism is extremely limited. Thank you very much for addressing my curiosity! They are textual markers from Fields edition of the Hexapla, Partly reserved from what remains of Origen's text. Original textual Criticism. There should be an asterisk and what is called an obelisk (a "t" type symbol rotated to the right a few degrees). These mark additions and subtractions in the hexaplaric text with the various columns presented.
