Frequency count in instant details box

Hi all, this is my first post. I went to a Accordance training day and they said to flag suggestions here.

I would love to be able to instantly see the number of occurances of any given word.

The main reason is that a number can tell us instantly whether a word requires investigation or not. By seeing a word and knowing that it only occurs once, or 50 times, or 15 times will change the way I approach the word with regard to the rest of the Bible.

Also, for those of us in theological colleges, this might help us to recognise obscure forms of words we should know. My college thinks I SHOULD be able to recognise every NT word that occurs more than 50 times. Having the count in the instant details box would help me to quickly recognise gaps in my knowledge that probably need to be plugged.

Does this ring true for anyone else?

On this, it would be nice to be able to see other occurances of the same word/root in the passage instantly by hovering over it rather than having to search separately. I just think this might help to make critical observations that you might not see otherwise.

Again, does anyone else agree?

John,

You can accomplish something similar by highlighting words that occur a certain number of times. For example, take the search: [COUNT 1]@ [verb]. This will find all verbs that occur 1x in the NT, or other range depending on your preference. (NB: in order to get an accurate count you must use the Range command, not the More Options drop down). From there you can create a custom highlight style, such as Hapax or Hapax Romans. Then Shift-Click on the Style and it will highlight all of your search hits. Expand your count to 1-49 and when you encounter one of these highlighted words you'll know whether you need to "cheat" and hover over the word to get lexical info, or if you should know it ;)

Thanks Rick, this is a helpful suggestion that would solve the reading issue and the issue of finding hapax(es?). Although I might suggest that an overly highlighted text could get ugly - I would like to know the count of more than just these two examples. I think that an instant word count would be more functional.

That said, I know there are other ways around this and relatively simple ones too. I also know that programming these sorts of things takes time and if I'm the only one out there who would use an instant count then the Accordance team probably has better things to develop, if you know what I mean! :)

This feature has been suggested from time to time. It would involve one of two options:

  1. Indexing the word count within the module: this requires recompiling each module, and would only give the word count for the entire text, not for the current range.
  2. Computing the word count on the fly: the computation would necessarily slow down the display of the Instant Details, perhaps not noticeably on the fastest systems.

We will consider these options for a future upgrade.

I know this is a very old thread, but I too would find this feature helpful for future development. Ideally, I would like to completely replace using the Kubo lexicon for speedy reading. Perhaps you could investigate adding the Kubo as a module, and users could have it scroll along while reading. It provides frequency both in the NT as a whole and in the individual book.
