User Notes in non-biblical texts?

Brian Irwin

Recommended Posts

Hi. Is it possible to create a user notes file for a non-biblical text such as the Quran? I have the Pickthal version of the Quran loaded and would like to add notes to it, but don’t see any notes prompt.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, it should work the same as any other Text or Tool. Do you see the Add Note indicator to the right of your text when you hover the mouse over a verse?

  • 2 years later...

Hi. It is now several years after your prompt reply. Please accept my apologies. To remind you, my question regarded an inability to add user notes to a Qumran text (Quran - Eng. - Pickthall's Tr.).

On the Pickthall text that I have, "Quran - Eng. - Pickthall's Tr." no "+" appears to add a user note as it does with biblical texts. Also, the text that I have looks different from the one in your image in that the first line of my text is labelled "1.1" rather than "Q1 1" as in your example. I wonder if the text I have was a user-created free download that may not be set up to receive notes?

Perhaps I need to upgrade to one of your Qumran bundles. Your advice would be appreciated. I promise to check my support replies in under three years this time.

Thanks,

Brian

Qumran or Quran?

No you don't need to upgrade. But I have a question: do you have set the Notes on the new format?

Preferences User Notes:

  • Upgrade User Notes: This button appears only if you have User Notes files that are in the old format (pre-V11). Click Upgrade User Notes to convert all your User Notes Files to take advantage of the full User Notes features in Version 11. The User Notes files are changed from *.acc4 to *.amynotes.

Try this file. Quran Notes.amynotes.zip

Then press Command-T to change the Hyperlinks to a Quran. Save it as default.

Thanks for your reply, Fabian. Yes, it was "Quran". I see that habit or my spell checker took over and substituted "Qumran" at one point. Thanks for the notes file. It turns out that my notes were upgraded. The Quran file that I am using is "Quran - Eng. - Pickthall's Tr..acc7" and is currently in the User Tools folder (Documents/Accordance Files/User Tools/Quran - Eng. - Pickthall's Tr..acc7). The date on the Quran file is 2013. The font and verse references look different from the one you appear to have:

1. al-Fatihah: The Opening

1.1  In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

1.2  Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,

I have the recollection that it was a user-created module that I downloaded for free from the Accordance website. In any event, no "+" symbol appears that would allow me to add a note. It may be that the module is not installed in the proper location. I do not see it among my modules in the Hypertext pull-down menu as appears in your screen shot. I will tinker around some more, but may just end up buying one of the Quran modules and install those instead.

Thanks for your kind response. I will let you know what happens.

Hello Brian

Ah ok I understand now. Sorry this Quran is made as User Tool not as User Bible. I'm not sure if User Notes are possible on User Tools on Accordance 11. I guess this came with 12. And that it works to make notes you have to convert it as a regular tool. This came with 12 I think. Then it works.

Maybe you are on a higher Accordance than 11. You can Convert it as a Regular Tool. Cock-wheel and

You get then the +-sign.

You'll will find then the Quran under "Other Books" in the Library. You are able to highlight, make notes etc.

Or you can do the following.

Download the Hebrew Quran from https://accordancefiles1.com/exchange/tools.htm. So you get the verse mappings. Then follow the steps on

Compare between the Pickthall as text (left) and as User Tool (right)

Or you can purchase a Quran from Accordance. They will then act like a Bible (lmage above left).

If you go the way with the text I suggest to look at

Or use the Range Preset from https://accordancefiles1.com/exchange/highlights.htm
