Custom biblical texts

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would like to be able to create my own sets of biblical verses, chapters, or books, all live like any biblical text in Accordance. For instance, I would like to collect all of the Laments from the HB into a "Laments Text" that functions like HMT or BHS. I could think of dozens of sets that I would like to make for dozens of Workspaces.

Thanks, and regards,

Michel

If I'm understanding the request properly, then it is similar to what I wrote about here.

This is an application of layers that I posited in a paper a couple of years back. You could create such things as views (to use a database term), or layers, on top of the base document. Such views could then be used in the same manner as the base text. I think this sort of thing is really valuable in work with texts.

You can almost do it in Accordance with something like reference lists of verses and then constrain your searches based on the verses in the reference list. You end up creating the Reference List with the verses you want in it. You then open a search tab on the same text and do searches like [CONTENTS ref list tab] <AND> "Lord", for example. This may be enough for use. You can save the reference lists as using File -> Save Active Tab ... so you can create as many as you need.

Thx

I'm sure Accordance has many great ways of doing things, such as Michel's desire to isolate certain portions of existing texts (e.g. laments).  Honestly, I'm not experienced enough to know about those possibilities.  As far as my approach, however, I just want Accordance to support other books, chapters, and verses so that I can create texts / versions that don't yet exist.  And in that vein, your suggestions D. seem way too complicated.

By way of contrast, in another Bible software I use, there is a simple text file called "Book names," and when a user creates a text that isn't supplied in the main program (e.g. Tacitus' histories), they provide a book name which you can quickly update in the "Book names" file, and suddenly that new text is visible just like any other text in the program.  It can be navigated by book, chapter, and verse, *and* cross-searched with all other texts.  To me, that seems ideal.

I know that currently Tacitus' histories (for example) could probably be created as a tool in Accordance, but not as a text, with the same capabilities described above.

What I suggested could be sugar coated in a number of ways for ease of use. I was describing more how to model it. And in fact, it was in part motivated by the use case of alternative versification. And yes importing should support it also.

Thx
