Questions from a new Accordance user

Recommended Posts

As a new Accordance user (coming over from BibleWorks after some twenty-five years), I have a few questions.

  1. My first question regards being able to import directly from Accordance into Microsoft Word. (On BW - Shift-Ctrl- B). Does Accordance have this type of function?
  2. Is it possible to organise the Bible Texts into something which is of easier access, i.e. those that I would use: English, Hebrew Greek, Latin, German, etc; and so keep languages I would never use hidden away separately?
  3. When I purchased, I also received the NIV 2011 edition with notes.
  • Is it possible to turn the notes "on" or "off", so that I see them only when I want?
  • Is it possible to change from a "red letter" edition (not my preference) to just "black letter"?

Many thanks for your help.

It is all a bit new to me, but having used the program only for a short while, (I only downloaded it this morning!) I will say that I am impressed with a number of the features, particularly with the ease of changing the font size and style, as well as the ease of access to commentaries, grammars, etc.

Hi Jim,

1) I don't think I understand your first question. But if you are talking about copying text from Accordance, you might need to install Accordance Services and use the short cut SHIFT + COMMAND + A, which will launch a menu where you can insert the reference and it will copy the text for you.

2) You can create sub-folders under the text folder and label them however you want. See the attached screenshot 1.

3) See screenshot 2 on turning notes off (suppose I understand you correctly) and hiding red letter.

Blessings

Thank you very much.

My first question should have read Shift + Ctrl + B, but for some reason the emoji appeared.

I put it down to getting a new computer and not being used to it yet!

I greatly appreciate your help.

Hi Jim,

Welcome to the forum and Accordance Bible. As you say it is a very impressive and capable software tool. For new users of Accordance I recommend going through the Getting Started guide which is included in every collection. If you have a large number of modules purchases already you can easily find it by doing a search of your library or via the help menu.

Now to answer your questions:

1. Check out Accordance Help for the multitude of options to insert text into other apps. (The earlier mentioned services information I believe is Mac only and since I am a Mac only user of Accordance it might be better to ask this question of a windows user which according to your profile is the platform you are using)

2. Take a look here in the Getting started Guide: "Organizing your Library"

While most of the screenshots from this section of the Getting Started guide are in the tool category the same principles apply to texts.

For an example of what you can do, here is a screenshoot of texts from my library organisation.

Accordance recommends that you put your top English, Greek and Hebrew texts in place 1, 2 & 3.

3. Again take a look  here in the Getting started Guide: "To customize every aspect of the text’s appearance, open the Set Text Pane Display dialog. You can do this by choosing Set Text Pane Display… from the Display menu or from a text pane’s Gear menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Control+T (Win) or Command-T (Mac)."

Note this preference setting is for changing each individual tool (say the NIV 2011 if you wish). If you wish to change preferences for all tools you can do it through the preference settings shown earlier.

You will find this forum a very useful place to ask questions.

Hi Jim,

As Michael said above, welcome to Accordance and the forum.  As a BibleWorks user myself, I may be able to speak of some things I've learned here.  I don't copy directly into Word much, but I do copy regularly into other word processors by manually highlighting, and then copying and pasting.  Therefore, I may not be able to advise on this particular question of yours.

As far as a way to organize your texts, Michael showed a good screenshot above.  Here are two screenshots from me, showing the "Text Browser"--a recent enhancement by Accordance which is very similar to BibleWorks' ability to custom arrange texts of various languages in a single window.  See this screenshot, showing the Text Browser on the right side of the screen, with several original language texts.

Also, a second screenshot shows how to custom build "Groups" in your Library, as you will see that I have done.  Once you build your own Groups, you can select them from a dropdown menu in the Text Browser pane (see that screenshot again), and that way you can have only the texts that you want to see.

Incidentally, I find this process a bit easier in Accordance than in BibleWorks, as you can drag and drop texts--even in bulk--but BibleWorks only has manual "Up / Down" arrows to reorder your Favorites list, so it takes longer.

  • 3 weeks later...

I am a new user to Accordance, coming over from BibleWorks. Admittedly my first week and a half I was just miserable, but I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel and am even optimistic that it is not an oncoming train.

That said, is it possible to copy a text in Accordance (e.g. a scripture text from the NIV 2011) and then paste it into Word but have it leave out all the footnote markings (see the red "a" in the following paste from the NIV2011). When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.a 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

Is it possible to either 1) set it not to show all the reference footnotes, or, 2) to copy and paste without them?

This was a feature that was very helpful in BibleWorks since it saves a lot of time while preparing a sermon manuscript or writing a paper to not have to go through and delete them all.

Certainly! Go to your "Citation" setting in the Accordance Preferences and adjust them as you like. Then, when copying from a Text, use "Edit—>Copy as Citation" (instead of simply "Edit—>Copy."

You can also just do a Copy As -> No Superscripts to ignore those characters, without going through a citation.

To remove them from the display of your text, choose Set Text Pane Display from the gear in the upper corner of your pane.  From that new dialog, choose 'Advanced' and select 'Hide superscripts'.

Yep, you don't need to install anything, just enable it in your preferences. ctrl-shift-ALT-a [see following post!] will do it for you straight into windows.

I think all your other questions have been answered, but let us know if there are others that come.

Just one helpful hint for future users since I tried this and it didn't work. The correct combination is control-ALT-a.

Indeed. Apologies! ctrl-alt-a indeed.

Perhaps an extra thing to note is if you use multiple programs (word, PowerPoint, Evernote etc), then it will auto-insert into whichever program was opened first. It will ask you if you want to insert into, say, word, in which case you can just hit enter, but if you want it to go into PowerPoint, then you just have to copy to clipboard. If you plan on doing more than a couple of verses then you may want to quit the program it’s defaulting to, so that it’s just that bit quicker to insert.

Happy get verses-ing.
