Quad HD or 4K Monitor with Accordance

Hi ya,

I'm interested in experiences running 2560 x 1440 (QHD) or 3840 x 2160 (4K) on Windows (I'm using Win 10 if it matters) and using Accordance. I currently run a 17" gaming laptop with FHD (1920 x 1080) on the laptop screen and a 24" external also running at FHD. I am considering upgrading the external monitor to QHD or 4K in the 27-34" range.

Any war stories, issues with Accordance, particularly in OL, pitfalls to watch for would be good to hear about.

EDIT: Also, if anyone is using a curved monitor I'd be interested in your in hearing about how well or poorly that works.

Thx

D

Daniel, not precisely your situation but close--I have a three screen workstation that I use every day: a 5K 27" screen iMac with a second 5K LG monitor and a 1080p HP monitor. On the two 5K displays, I keep them scaled down to 2560 x 1440. Nearly every day, I am also running Windows on either these screens via Parallels and have had no issues. I have also on occasion connected my Lenovo ThinkPad to the LG monitor, have run it at 2560 x 1440, and have had no issues with Accordance.

Good to know Rick, thanx. And the 5K's are both flat panel right not curved ?

Also, the LG is 27" or a bit larger ?

Thx

All of my monitors are flat. The LG is 27" like the iMac.

I use dual Dell P2415Q panels via Thunderbolt on my MacBook Pro. These are 4k panels.

When expositing Hebrew, I setup Accordance with [LINK HALOT] mode to all of my favorite Hebrew dictionaries on one monitor, then the text itself, a Research window searching the grammars on the other monitor, and perhaps the syntax module.

I put my manuscript on my laptop screen and now I have two huge screens with the books open in front of me. Bliss.

I have a BenQ EL2870U 28 Inch UHD 4K monitor alongside my 27" 5K iMac, only I find I have to run it at 1280x720 to get 60fps, anything else drops the frame rate to disturbing levels.

I'm pretty new at running two monitors like this, so if you know how I can get the second one to match the iMac (i.e. 2560 x 1440 and 60fps) please chip in here.

Rick, what frame rate are you getting on your monitors at 2560 x 1440?

I'm running whatever frame rate the default is on the iMac and LG. It's interesting that neither the iMac nor the LG monitor (which was designed in cooperation with Apple) offer a frame rate option either in System Preferences or in SwitchResX. In these screenshots from SwitchResX, you'll notice that frame rate only displays on my HP monitor. I actually don't know what the default frame rate is for the iMac or LG. I can say that I have no trouble running the monitors at these resolutions, but that may also be due to the GPU.

I assumed Alistair meant a gaming frame per sec rate not the monitor refresh rate. It's really a CPU, graphics card and app issue though the refresh rate will place a upper limit on fps I believe. I don't know what the iMacs are capable of driving in an external monitor for gaming. Never tried it. But your screenshot above says 60Hz for the HP monitor. I don't know what the others can run at.

Thx

Hi Daniel,

No I did mean a laggy-cursor-inducing screen refresh/redraw rate of 30fps. This seems to be a hardware setting in the BenQ monitor when I change the resolution with System Preferences. When I increase the resolution, it lowers the refresh rate, which makes sense, only its meant to be a 4K monitor.

The iMac has a set refresh rate of 60fps, AFAIK this cannot be changed.

I use EyeFriendly to change monitor resolutions but it doesn't give me refresh rate data.

My bad Alistair. Hmmmm.... I am not sure then. On a PC there appears to be a setting in the Settings to check and alter the refresh rate if the monitor and graphics card support altering it. I just checked my Windows laptop and my internal display is 120Hz the external 59 Hz - both are HD so not the same resolution. But not using the graphics card I expected - have to check that.

I don't have an external monitor on my iMac. I cannot even find a refresh rate on my iMac for the display. Probably need to download some 3rd party thing to do that. But 30Hz sounds low. Do you have the manufacturer data on that monitor ? Their manual ?

thx

Hey Alistair, Do have that BenQ monitor model number ? I'd like to check out its specs. I have been playing a bit with my laptop and framerates and such and just want to check something out.

Thx
