Really Can't Do This?

So, I'm using Accordance again today, and I keep hitting my head against the wall with this one simple task that I can't figure out. My hope is I'm just missing something.

When I have a pane open with two parallel items (a bible and cross reference), when I click on the cross reference link I want it to open in the bible (not in a separate tab - now its opening a completely knew workspace). Is there a way to do this? I often follow rabbit trails using TSK and opening and closing tabs is really a disjointed way to do this.

I've included a screenshot in hopes of making it clearer.

If I click on the hyperlink reference circled in red, I want it to open in the bible pane next to it (the square). This would change everything linked to the NKJV pane as well as the TSK pane. Then, reading that text and checking the TSK for that new verse, I typically will click then on another reference and follow it, and everything updates again.

Is this really not an option in Accordance? Do I have to open a new tab with each reference I click? Operating like this renders it impossible to follow a TSK trail. When I do, I have all these tabs open. It quickly becomes a mess.

I found a possible solution, but I will have to rework my workspace. Using a regular "search" bible text pane does not seem to work the way I'm wanting at all. Not sure why, it just doesn't. Not even with the Info Pane (which I don't care for anyway and keep closed).

But, I've been keeping a "results" bible pane open in a tab in my main zone so when I click on a reference hyperlink I know where it's going to go and it doesn't keep opening in a new window (which I obviously hate).

If I take this "results" bible pane and then pull up TSK as a parallel within that pane (or zone?), it works exactly as I wish. Double clicking on a hyperlink reference in TSK opens that reference in context in the pane next to it, and all other linked panes and zones are updated along with it.

I will either put a separate zone on the right with a bible "search" pane in it for searching or I can put it in the same zone, as a tab. I wish there were not two types of bible panes (search and display) but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. As long as it works.

Why 1942, I might be reading your question wrong.  However, what I think you need to do is have a separate pane with recycling switch on.

I have enclosed a workspace to show you how this might work.  I hope this is what you're after and that it is of some help.  You can see when you click the cross-ref, the new window updates automatically.

If you drag your cursor across two or three refs, they should all appear in the other pane.

p.s. On further reading of you wanting to highlight the text in your red box; using the same workspace.

1. make sure live click is off

2. place your courser over any verses on the left.

3. click 'context' icon on the tool bar (you can add that if you don't have it, using customise toolbar)

Hi Paul,

Thanks very much for the response and the suggestions. This was actually how I was using it prior to this post. It was not the workflow I really wanted. I had TSK in a far right separate zone, with another zone set up on the left (similiar to what you have in the workspace you attached). When I clicked on the highlighted reference in the TSK, it insisted on opening a "display" pane in the left side zone instead of in my main tab (search pane). Apparently the search pane is different and does not like or will not allow you to open hyperlinks into it.

To solve this, I switched my search pane out for a display pane, opened an additional parallel pane in that same zone and it now works great. When I click on the hyperlink in TSK parallel pane, it opens in the bible display parallel pane right next to it. Since all the other panes are in parrallel with it, everything is updated, including the TSK. This allows me to head down the rabbit holes nicely. There are a few limitations, of course, since I'm not certain Accordance was really designed to work the way I'm used to.

1. I can't search from the display pane. To resolve this I opened the search pane to the right side zone. This is not linked to the left zone in any way, so it works out great. If I want to look up a reference separately, I use this search pane. If I want to follow a rabbit trail using TSK, I do so from my main reading/display pane on the left.

2. Another issue is, once I'm about three or four verse references into my rabbit trail, sometimes I want to go back and review the first or second, or just return to the first verse that started the rabbit trail to begin with. In the Search pane you can do this easily. It has an extensive history list by clicking the magnifying glass in the search box. The Display pane does not have this feature. I did find forward and back arrows at the bottom right of the display pane (next to the box where you can type in a reference to look up). This allows for one step back or one step forward. That's it. In a perfect world, these buttons would let me go all the way back to the beginning, but, one step back is better than no step back I suppose.

I imagine its all a matter of getting through the growing pains. Switching from a software program I've used for nearly 10 years is difficult, especially since I'm set in my ways, my workflows and I'm really, really stubborn. But, my previous program was somewhat basic and I was hitting roadblocks. I can already see how Accordance can solve some of those issues - I just have to get used to it and tweak my process until we can get along with each other.
