mikes Posted August 14, 2009 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Search using NLT, NRSV, NET or HCSB in the english bible. If you have NET, the NET Notes module has an explanation of the variant. Basically, 13:1 is what you'll find in NAS and KJV. GNT-T has it as 12:18 GNT-TRS as 13:1. If you don't have the NET Bible and its notes, I would strongly suggest you pick that up. Timothy Jenney Posted August 14, 2009 Share Posted August 14, 2009 There are actually two textual issues here. One is a matter of punctuation, the other a question of a verb's person. Translators vary on when to consider "And he [or "it" or "I"] stood on the sand of the sea" as part of the preceding paragraph [in which case some have numbered it 12:18] or as part of the following paragraph [in which case they have just placed it at the beginning of 13:1]. Rev. 12:18 does appear in NA-27th edition, but has been accidentally omitted from Accordance's 3.0.7 version of the GNT-T. [i'll alert our developers to the issue.] The verb issue has to do with the following [translated] passage: "And he [or "it" or "I"] stood on the sand of the sea." The question is who is standing on the seashore, the narrator or the dragon? I suggest these issues be resolved in the following way: it is the dragon that stands on the shore of the sea, thus the verse properly belongs to chapter 12 and should probably be numbered as 12:18. This text is assigned there to verse 12:18 and does appear, as long as the search text shows verse 12:18. Where the search text (as in ESV) combines it with 12:17, the text appears to be missing from the Greek. We have said this so many times: when text seems to be missing from a version, make that version the search text and compare the results. In that case the ESV shows it is missing a verse.
