Tool Set Tiling Question

I've been playing around with using Tool Sets. The problem is even if I have "Open with Automatic Tiling" it opens both the tools as tabs on the main window. Am I doing something wrong? My understanding was that if this was checked that the tool sets should open as windows and not tabs on the main window.

You are correct that there is a little conflict here between the tools set feature and the newer workspace. The workspace feature overrides the setting of the tool set which is less frequently used. The tool set will only open in independent windows with tiling if another single window is the front window.

So the workaround (admittedly clumsy) is to first detach a tab (option-command T) or open a separate window (command-click on it in the Resource palette), and only then open your tiled tool set.

If you use this frequently you might want to turn off the Open with workspace option in General Preferences, since the reverse also applies. You can still use the workspace as long as you create a new workspace or have a saved one opened, and all new windows will open inside it. This will help if you open the tiled set when no windows are open.

In summary: the workspace preference affects only windows opened when none are already open. Whatever the preference, subsequent new windows depend on the current front window. If it is a workspace, they open in it; if it is a separate window, they open separately.

I think I understand what you are saying. I tried detaching a tab into separate window and then clicked user tools and it seemed to tile one of them and put the other one onto the tabbed workspace I detached the tab from. Regardless, it sounds like in order to retain the proper use of tabbed workspaces it would be better for me to use Favorites and use the detach trick you mentioned earlier when I want to retain something.

Just as a suggestion, I don't know how complex it would be for the programming, but it would be nice if that tiled feature could operate regardless of whether the originating window was a single window or a tab in a workspace. Just an idea...
