MT-LXX searching. Help!

I'm working on a research paper for my Hebrew Class on the Hebrew word "nephesh" and its usage. I just bought and installed the MT-LXX package with the LXX and the MT-LXX paralell.

 

So far, it's worked beautiful in merging a search for the word nephesh in the BHS-W4 to show me the correlating septuigint translations of the word.

 

Here's my problem, however:

 

What I really would like to do is use the MT-LXX to find nephesh in the BHS and then output the correlating Greek translation from the LXX so that I can search my LXX for those words and get a search analysis on them. The reason for this is the nephesh is used something like 760 times in the BHS and that's a lot of results to go through and analyze by hand.

 

Unfortunately, merging is only able to be used within tools, so I can't merge results from a tool BACK into my text search, can I?

 

I don't know if this is possible. It's possible on the tagged English texts to search for a Key (nephesh is H5315) and see the various ways it was translated in the NASB. But I want to see a way Nephesh has been variously translated in the LXX--making use of the further grammatical tagging in the LXX.

 

Is there any jerry-rigged way of having the MT-LXX output the opposite column of what I input to get an analysis on it? Or would this require having special versions of the LXX keyed to the BHS and vice versa? If this is not possible, that would be an amazing module request to be granted!

Basically the answer is no, it isn't possible. If you view the texts as Paragraphs and then export that, I think you could remove the first column and be left with the list of Greek forms. This may help you.

One way to save yourself a lot of time is to eliminate the most commonly occurring translation(s) by searching an instance of the LXX for ψυχη and then running this command in the MT-LXX window:

 

[MERGE <name of BHS-W4 window/tab>] <NOT> [MERGE <name of LXX1 window/tab>]

 

Along with setting Show: to "Paragraphs" or "Add Titles," this will make it easier to draw up your list of individual searches on the LXX.

I did something similar...

 

I searched the BHS for nephesh, then in a MT-LXX window I searched "[CONTENTS BHS-W4] <NOT> ψυχ*", and then in a second MT-LXX window I searched "‏נפשׁ‎<and>‏ ‎[MERGE MT-LXX Parallel 2]‏."

 

Doing this, I was able to search specifically for the Greek words that are not psyche that have a direct connection to nephesh in the BHS. This was able to narrow down my list to 125 hits (which is MUCH more helpful). Still... this doesn't let me go back a search text window and search for these Greek words. I love Accordance's "Details" button (I tend to love geeky statistics like that). Neither can I import the list of 125 or so verses that result back into my search window to have my LXX, BHS, and NASB all open to only those verses for additional comparison.

 

Of course, I can enter in each of the verse references individually (all 125 of them)... but (1) I'd expect something a little smarter could be done by the program itself (which is the point of having powerful bible study software after all) and (2) That still does not automatically search the specific words I'm focusing on within the LXX to grammatically analyze.

Once you have the 125 verses in your search results, you should be able to highlight all, right click, "Copy As" and select "References". (You can also just select all and then type Cmd-Option-R). You can then paste those verses, references only, into a search window. It's not "automatic", but it may allow you to compare more easily. Hope that helps!

Oops! Thanks, Helen. I don't have the MT/LXX tool, so I hadn't tried a similar search on my own. I suppose I would have found this out if I had done so.
