Holman Bible Commentary

I see that the Holman Bible Commentaries are on pre-sale. I've heard a lot less about the series compared to the NIV Application Commentary, which I assume is at the same level (i.e. not intensely academic, more application driven), so I was wondering if anyone would like to share their opinion about the Holman. Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing!

Except that I just purchased the NIVAC so purchasing the Holman Bible Commentary as well isn't a real option for me right now.

I had been borrowing a friend's hardcopy NIVAC on Acts for quite a while and really enjoyed it. I also checked out the series at the library before making that buy decision.

I did come across a link which gives a sample of the Holman commentary you can review.

The link is http://www.wordsearchbible.com/catalog/Holman_Old_and_New_Testament_Commentary_Series_4133.html

Click on the "View a sample" icon.

Maybe this will help you decide.

To add to your considerations, the Bible Speaks Today has long been my favourite series for less technical, more contemporary issues approach. I've been using this in my personal devotions for many years. I'm thoroughly delighted that my wife is now doing the same thing :)

Many blessings,

Wei

I would say the Holman is even more devotional/application-focused then the NIVAC. I have some in print and have found them to be great, very different then the NIVAC which follows a more methodical approach (Translation of a large section, Original Meaning, Bridging Contexts, Contemporary Significance for that section), while the Holman is more chapter by chapter, verse by verse commentary with Introductions, application, and even (at least in mine) "Suggested step-by-step group study" sections for a chapter.

I would say the Holman is more like the BST then NIVAC in terms of "feel".
