Rod Decker
I'm working on the various accent forms of εἰμί as an enclitic, etc. in Mark. I ran this search (in a custom range, Mark 1:1-16:8--which still insists on including the Short Ending that *follows* v. 8! but it's less work to manually adjust from that than the entire book and have to omit forms from vv 9-20--but that's another story!) "ἐστιν" <OR> "ἐστίν" <OR> "ἔστιν" When I then click the Details button, Analysis tab, requesting only Inflected forms for the analysis, I get these stats: Total number of verses = 69 (total number of verses displayed = 69) "ἐστιν" (4 total words) Number of different forms = 2: ἔστιν = 1 ἐστιν = 3 "ἐστίν" (0 total words) "ἔστιν" (69 total words) Number of different forms = 4: ἔστιν = 8 ἐστιν = 49 ἐστὶν = 4 ἐστίν = 8 I'm apparently doing something wrong since I get 3 lists, the forms of which overlap for 2 and 1 shows 0 when there are such forms in the text (listed in both the other 2 lists). If I change my search and specify the grammatical form instead of searching for inflected forms, I get this: Total number of verses = 69 (total number of verses displayed = 69) ειμι@[verb pres ind third sing] (73 total words) Number of different forms = 4: ἔστιν = 9 ἐστιν = 52 ἐστὶν = 4 ἐστίν = 8 Which apparently combines the two lists from the inflected forms search. If I search for =ἔστιν I get an error, asking me to select the correct *lexical* form, even though the Help file says that "In Greek the exact search [i.e., "The equal sign in front of a word requires a search for the exact form which follows it"] includes the capitalization, ending forms, accents, and breathing marks." I'm totally puzzled; it appears that the grammatical search is the only way to get the right results, but surely I should be able to search for inflected forms to get the appropriate subsets (i.e., all forms of *just* ἔστιν)? Probably one of those obvious things that I'm forgetting...
Rick Bennett
Read your post pretty quickly, but here's something to try: wrap the form in quotes and place the = before it. Are these the results you're looking for?
Rod Decker
Read your post pretty quickly, but here's something to try: wrap the form in quotes and place the = before it. Are these the results you're looking for? I tried that already. When I search for ="ἔστιν" I get a dialog asking me to select the *lexical* form! Whoops! I just realized you had a screen shot. Looks like I'm putting the = in the wrong place. I was searching for ="ἔστιν" But you have "=ἔστιν" That does, indeed, make quite a difference and does give me what I need. (I knew it was likely something simple.) I must have missed it in the Help files, but an example of that or a comment about the correct sequence of operators in that type of search would be very helpful.
