search command clarification

I saw that Rod Decker (according to his blog) did this search:

[ADJECTIVE] <FOLLOWED BY> <WITHIN 1 Words> [CONJUNCTION]@και <FOLLOWED BY> <WITHIN 1 Words> [ADJECTIVE]

Doing this search in the gospels I get 118 hits.

I don't understand why the search above is different from this search:

[ADJECTIVE] [CONJUNCTION]@και [ADJECTIVE]

where I only get 59 hits in the gospels.

Further, I don't understand why in the longer search above, the first adj in the chain is not highlighted, only kai and the second adj. Ultimately, I think I'm asking for clarification on the <followed by> and <within 1 words> commands. It seems like this string should be the same as simply placing the two words next to each other (in this case, adj and [conj]@kai). Thanks for any help.

Hmmm. The good news is that you are correct, both searches should find the same results, and in fact I think they do find identical verses. The shorter search counts the number of phrases as the number of hits.

Multiple commands in a string have always been a little problematic in the Search window, and are more accurate when defined in the Construct window. Thus it is a little bug that the first adjective isn't highlighted, nor listed in Details>Analysis. It's really best to do these searches on the Construct window.

Thanks very much. Construct search was my knee jerk reaction, too.
