sacha zemp
Hello I would like to count the number of chapters in a range of bible books. Sounds easy, but the COUNT Command only finds words. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Regards Sacha Zemp
Joel Brown
Well, its not a straightforward means, but it works just fine. You can use a construct search to find when a word only occurs once in a chapter (see pic). If we do this for *any* word, we'll find one hit per chapter, always. So, run this search over a range and you'll get the number of hits being the number of chapters in that range. Note, for doing a Chapter type search, you must use the Range popup, rather than the RANGE command. See example:

Helen Brown
I think the use of the Construct is a great idea, but this construct doesn't find where a word occurs only once in a chapter. If it did, it wouldn't be reliable as you cannot assume that every chapter has a word that occurs only once. You are finding every word that occurs first in the chapter, with no preceding word. Another way to do the same thing is to create a construct with any word, and add the Place 1 to the same column, and set the field to Chapter. Darryl
Hello I would like to count the number of chapters in a range of bible books. Sounds easy, but the COUNT Command only finds words. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Regards Sacha Zemp If I understand you correctly, another option without the use of the construct window would be to use the FIELD command. Search by chapter, define your range of book(s), and use the following search string: ?* <WITHIN 1 Words> [FIELD Begin] Essentially you're telling Accordance to look for any word within only one word of the of the beginning of the the chapter field (i.e., one word per chapter). The total chapters will be the second number (e.g., for Genesis Verse 1 of 50 = 50 chapters; one hit per chapter). Hope that helps. Darryl

I believe mine will give results, though, as technically I am searching for any chapter with more than 1 word. Since the words don't have [AGREE] in them, it isn't finding the words that only occur once in a chapter. Just a technicality, though
