copyright question

I am slowly moving some of my teaching materials into files that I share with my students over what they call e-campus, a learning management system. Since the question of copyright is always virulent at our university, my question here: Can I share excerpted materials from Accordance with students over this medium? I am particularly interested in the materials from graphical modules, but also excerpts from texts.

To describe the system a bit more: If the course is a seminar, access is restricted to the seminar participants who are electronically registered as current students and who have filled in registration for this particular seminar. Access to lectures and their notes on the e-campus is open to all registered students of the university since this is an open class.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

As I understand it, there are four categories of material that you may want to use in these lessons:

  1. Public domain text: of course there is no problem here.
  2. Copyright text: generally small amounts of quotations are considered fair use as long as they are clearly attributed. Some Bibles come with copyright notices that limit the number of quoted verses.
  3. The Atlas and Timeline are simply tools in which you create an image. The work is therefore yours and may be freely used, though we do appreciate acknowledgement of the source.
  4. The photos and other images are copyright, and their use online is restricted. I think that as long as access to your materials is restricted to your students, and you post a reminder that these images may not be posted online for public access, and you use lower resolution images, there would not be a problem with the images that belong to OakTree. For images with other copyrights, please contact the copyright holders for permission.

I hope this is helpful.
