User Tool Update

Recommended Posts

While I am on a roll regarding new features for Accordance products, the User Tool creating functionality is really quite frustrating and in desperate need of some of bug fixes if not a total makeover.

I would not expect a full blown word processor functionality. However, the current user tool editor loses bookmarks and introduces unwanted hanging indents.

I would have to agree. It also has (or had) some other problems, critical problems which I'm not sure has been addressed. About a year ago, I had identified problems with it losing data when insert editing into long documents, it was just before version 9.0 came out. I was told it would get fixed, but I'm not sure if it has yet. Currently, I can't check it out because, well... it's now completely broke until the next update anyway. I hope it didn't get put on the back burner a year ago and someone has let the fire go out. It's quite a frustrating when you spend hours on creating a document and all of sudden it starts losing data in the middle of the text.

Last night it would not allow me to edit the last 5 or so pages of a 13 page document. The text was there in the module after import, but I was unable to access the last 5 or 6 pages when attempting to edit it. Eventually, I gave up - too frustrating for me to deal with. I was using 9.5.2 RC.

Thanks for the update. I won't waste my time messing with it then. It's a shame no one has taken care of these problems over the past year or so.

I think people need to speak up more about this to help drive the priority.

Well, I'm pretty upset about it myself. I'm not trying be nasty but I discovered the problems with this issue just after I first purchased Accordance a little over a year ago, just before the release of version 9. I spent many hours of wasted time trying to figure out what was going on and why I kept losing data. I finally asked Helen about it, wondering if there was going to be a fix before the release of 9.0. It was not a priority then, and apparently it's not a priority now. What concerns me is, how many other people have wasted countless hours trying to figure out where their lost data has gone to and no one from Accordance (that I'm aware of) has given any effort to make people aware that there is a problem. Helen just stated yesterday that they don't have a thread or a list of known bugs in the forum or on the blog to warn people because according to Helen, they usually take care of issues as fast as they are discovered. This issue however apparently has just been ignored and that's just wrong.

Ron and Greg, we are very sorry that these problems have not been addressed. We have been unable to reproduce them ourselves, and that makes them hard to find and fix. If Greg could email me the original document and the resulting user tool, we'll certainly take a look at that. A radical makeover of the user tools and notes may not be our top priority, but getting what we have to work properly certainly is. That said, the user tool feature is, as we anticipated, one of the most difficult to troubleshoot, since we have no control over the file that you are importing. There are so many different formats that we cannot anticipate every possible combination and situation.

Thank you, Helen!

I sent the file with a bit of explanation. I was able to complete the editing of the text tonight by setting the User Tool edit buffer to Large.

Any new findings on these problems?

Honestly, they could include full wordprocessor functionality by using TinyMCE or FreeTextBox code.

TinyMCE being my favorite as a programmer.
