What does the result "(+dative)" means?

I'm doing some searches in the GNT-T concerning the differences between some textes. Starting with the search "*" I get all words in a previous specified range. When I now look to the Chart Analysis in the detail window and set the choice to "case" I expect a chart with the classical cases, i.e. nominative, dative , ... Searching in the Letter to Hebrews I don't see the genitive case. Instead there's one case which is labeled "(+dative)" (see attached picture). Searching in the whole NT, the dative case is missing and a category "(+accusative)" appears.

I'm wondering where the "missing cases" are and what this dubios "(+" means. I would be very happy if someone could help me with this.

That is indeed odd, and it looks like a bug to me.

 

Since the Analysis Bar Chart graphs the information that you can get in text form via the Analysis window, I opened an Analysis window, used command-T to open the Set Analysis Display dialog box, then deleted the LEX item from the first column and dragged a Case item into that column. This gives me an analysis of all the cases found by this search. That tells me that there are 1023 Genitives in the book of Hebrews—the same number as that strange +dative in the Analysis Bar Chart.

 

Thus, it looks to me like the Analysis Bar Chart is somehow inserting erroneous labels.

The +dative means a preposition that takes the dative case.

 

You don't need the quote marks, but in this case they make no difference (they search the inflected forms rather than the lexical forms).

 

If you look in the Analysis window and set it to show case, there are in fact 1023 genitive foms in Hebrews. However, they are not appearing in tha Bar Chart, nor the other Analysis charts, so we need to investigate this as a bug.

David is correct, the labels are getting confused. There should be the following cases for the preposition:

PREPOSITION = 408

(+genitive) = 152

(+dative) = 75

(+accusative) = 181

but they aren't appearing, and are probably confusing the charts.

 

Excluding prepositions with a search like *@-[Prep] gives accurate charts.

I concluded, that the safest way is to use the analysis window. Unfortunately it is a little bit elaborativ to change the settings of the Window, rather than to klick the List-button beneath the chart, if you want to see another category.

 

Helen - I'm wondering why Accordance lists the prepositions at all! I was searching for all words, not just prepositions. (I used the quot-marks only in the post - to indicate exactly, what I typed in the search bar).

 

I assume from your posts that this bug is in V9 as well, isn't it?

Yes, this bug is in version 9 but we'll fix it as soon as possible. Yes, you were searching for all words including prepositions, and when you sort just by Case, the case taken by the preposition is messing up the various charts.
