A Simple Map: Acts 11:19

Good Evening-

I am trying to help my pastor set up a map for tomorrow morning. The map is based upon three locations listed in Acts 11;19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.”

(Acts 11:19 ESV)

Through reading through the blogs I can get them to come up on a simple map, by highlighting, and then clicking the map button on the Resource Pallete. I don't seem to be able to save the map and customize.

It seems Cyprus and Phoenicia are "regions" and of course Antioch is a city.

What I think my pastor wants is a simple map of where those locations are with a couple other cities such as Jerusalem and maybe Damascus.

I am hoping to do something like the attached file but simpler without all the country and region outlines.

Thanks for any help

I think your best bet is

-to create a "Custom Sites" layer with the cities/towns you want to show

-Create a User Layer and manually label Phoenicia and Cyprus

-Set Route layers as desired

Once you've got what you want, select the desired area, control-click or right-click and choose "Print Selection." If you are in need of a paper map, print on your printer. If you are looking for a graphic for a presentation, "Print" as PDF.

The Help documentation will give you more specifics on the various tasks above.

Todd, the Atlas is a highly customizable, very powerful and helpful tool. Theres a lot you can do there, so at some point I recommend you play around whenever you get a chance. Let me go through a few bits of it right here that may help:

The Atlas is defined by the 5 popup menus at the top of the Atlas window. They are:

Background: This determines the color of the elevation of the map. Popular choices are 'Colors', 'Light Colors', or my favorite 'Light Browns'.

Sites: This determines which group of sites/cities will be displayed. There are some nice defaults there already, or you can make your own, or set it to [No Sites] if you don't want any displayed.

Regions: This determines which areas will be displayed. On one hand this can display 'Geographic Names', such as 'Caanan' and 'Dead Sea'. Another option is actual bounded regions such as the tribes of israel or Roman Empire. As with Sites, this can also be set to [No Regions].

Routes: This is where you either show static routes, such as roads and paths, or animated routes, such as journeys, travels, movement, or battles. This is one of the most exciting options, so I recommend you play with the different choices in the menu. For more static pictures, I usually have this set to 'Ancient Highways' to get a feel for the road systems of the day.

User Layers: This is an advanced setting where you can create your own maps of whatever you want in the area. But, its a bit more complicated than it sounds like what you want.

Now, the final most important thing to learn about is the 'Find' button. Using this, you can add whatever extra sites or regions you want to any map.

So, as an example for your map, since you want a plain, simple map, I've set the Sites, Regions, and Routes to display [No ___], but I've done a 'Find' and found the three locations you've mentioned. I've zoomed out a bit to show the surrounding geographical context, as well.

Let me know if this helps explain using the Atlas a bit better.

As Joel showed, you can set all the pop-ups to No ____ and use the Find button to locate any names on the map, regardless of whether they're sites or regions. But what if you don't want all those names to appear in red? You can use the keyboard shortcut Command-T to open the Map display settings, then select Extra Site Names and set the text color to black. Do the same for Extra Region Names and you'll have the simple map with the names you want in black rather than red.

You guys ROCK! I really appreciate it. I got the map with the three points he requested on it.

I wanted to save my work on the map so that I could show him and possibly do edits tomorrow morning with him. I figured out that the best way to do it is to save the map as a "session" seemed to be the easiest way to save the specific map and be able to edit it easily. Am I correct on that? (When I tried to just save active tab, i was not able to open it consistently)

I know then to save as picture or export to pdf will work to get it out of accordance and put it into powerpoint.

Next Question is it possible to export the actual animation (not just the static image) to show for instance Paul's first Missionary journeys?. We will end up putting this into powerpoint ultimately to present.
